Story
The scene is a remote African hinterland adjacent to an unexplored area where gorillas are found. Here is the base of Victor Marswell ( Clark Gable ) - a professional hunter who supplies wild animals to various zoos in the world and organizes safaris . He is assisted by local natives and two whites - Dr. John Brown-Price ( Philip Stanton ) who does not part with the monocle and Leon Bolshak ( Eric Polman ) who does not dry out of the genie. Once, returning from an unsuccessful hunt, Victor discovers at home a charming brunette Eloise Kelly ( Ava Gardner ), who was going to hunt with the Bangalore Maharaja, but he left her ... The stern hunter is not enthusiastic about the frivolous American, but starts an affair with her.
Soon, a couple of English scientists arrive along the river: the enthusiastic Donald Nordley ( Donald Sinden ) and his stiff wife Linda ( Grace Kelly ). Donald Nordley is going to the country of gorillas to make a documentary about them. Victor, carried away by the Englishwoman, quickly puts Kelly on the ship. On the same day, events take place: Donald has an attack of an allergy to the tsetse fly vaccine, and Kelly arrives on a boat late at night: the ever-drunk captain of the river boat ran aground just 3 miles away.
After the recovery of Donald Nordley, the whole company goes to the country of gorillas. Victor is actively caring for Linda Nordley, about which her husband has no idea. Linda falls in love with him, and they decide that Victor will tell Donald about everything while catching gorillas. However, Victor at the last moment does not dare to destroy the marriage of his guests. However, Leon Bolshak hints to Donald about the romance between his wife and Victor, and he goes to the camp. Meanwhile, Victor gets drunk in his tent, Kelly consoles him, in the arms of each other they are caught by Linda Nordley. She is trying to shoot Victor from his own pistol. This ends their romance. Appearing Donald sees injured Victor and two women. Kelly, saving Miss Nordley's reputation, says that Linda shot, fighting off the hunter's persistent courtship.
The next day, the expedition must leave the country of gorillas in native canoes. Victor Marswell offers Eloise a marriage proposal. She refuses him, but then rushes into the river and swims to him. Their hugs take place against the backdrop of the final credits.

Aesthetics
- The film was supposed to show the beauty of the wildlife of Africa, so the shooting took place in different places, in particular, in Okalataka ( French Congo ), in the vicinity of Mount Kenya, on the Kagera River in Uganda and Tanzania.
- The musical design of the film was minimalistic: only national African instruments were used (which was completely uncharacteristic of Hollywood of that time), only in one scene did Ava Gardner accompany himself on a mechanical piano.
