Verkhovye is a village in the Smolensk region of Russia , in the Smolensk region . The population is 418 inhabitants ( 2007 ). It is located in the western part of the region 16 km north-west of the city of Smolensk , on the banks of the Udra River off the P133 Smolensk- Nevel highway. It is part of the Novoselsky rural settlement .

The village is gasified. The Udra River is very small and shallow, 2-6 meters wide.

History
The village is located at the source of the Udra River , hence its name apparently went.
Near the village is a forest, locals call it "forest". An old Smolensk road made of stones and cobblestones passes through a small section of this forest from the village towards Smolensk. On this road in 1812, the troops of Napoleon I attacked Moscow. The road with a length of approximately 1.5 km was preserved in its natural form, as it is in the forest.
Economics
Asphalt plant, a school with incomplete secondary education (9 classes), shops, a first-aid post, a post office and a club. Previously, in the village there was the UPH “ All-Union ” Agricultural Academy . In 1997, the Federal State Unitary Enterprise was established on its basis to provide food for correctional institutions in the Smolensk region. In 2001, the Federal Agricultural Unitary Enterprise organized the only agricultural colony in the region - PKU “ KP No. 7 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia for the Smolensk Region”.
