San Vicente ( port. São Vicente ) - a village in the north of the island of Madeira , in the island of Madeira Autonomous region of Madeira ( Portugal ), with a population of 3336 people (2001). It is the administrative center of the district of the same name (municipality) with an area of 78.70 km² and a population of 6198 people (2001) [1] , which borders in the west with the municipality of Porto Moniz , in the north - washed by the Atlantic Ocean , in the east it borders with the municipality of Santana, on south - with the municipalities of Camara di Lobos , Ribeira Brava , Ponta do Sol .

Economy
The economy of the municipality is dominated by the primary sector of the economy , represented by agriculture. Its southwestern part is extremely mountainous where animal husbandry is concentrated. The main type of transport are buses and taxis.
In terms of tourism, caves and a volcanic center ( port. Grutas e Centro do Vulcanismo de São Vicente ), which was opened in 1996, are popular . They have audiovisual equipment explaining the island's geomorphology. The cost of a ticket without benefits for adults to the volcanic center is 8 euros. In addition, on the territory of the municipality there are several observation platforms with picturesque panoramas of the island.
