It is part of a large metropolitan area of Greater Porto . According to the old administrative division, it was part of the province of Douro-Litoral . Included in the economic and statistical subregion of Greater Porto , which is part of the Northern region . The population is 17 324 people in 2001 . It covers an area of 14.42 km².
