Santo Tirso ( port. Santo Tirso [ 'sɐ̃tu' tiɾsu ]) is a city in Portugal , the center of the municipality of the same name in the Porto district. It is part of a large metropolitan area of Greater Porto . According to the old administrative division, it was part of the province of Douro-Litoral . Included in the economic and statistical subregion Ave , which is part of the Northern region . The population is 14 thousand inhabitants (city), 72.4 thousand inhabitants (municipality) in 2001 . It covers an area of 135.31 km².
