Povua di Varzin ( port. Póvoa de Varzim ; [ 'pɔvuɐ dɨ vɐɾ'zĩ ]) is a city in Portugal , the center of the eponymous municipality in the Porto district. It is part of a large metropolitan area of Greater Porto . According to the old administrative division, it was part of the province of Douro-Litoral . Included in the economic and statistical subregion of Greater Porto , which is part of the Northern region . The population is 42.4 thousand inhabitants (city), 63.5 thousand inhabitants (municipality) in 2001 . It covers an area of 82.1 km².
