  • "Sagen, Märchen und Lieder der Herzogtümer Schleswig-Holstein und Lauenburg" (Kiel, 1855 ),
  • "Zur Geschichte der Nibelunge Not" ( Brunswick , 1855 ),
  • Altdeutsche Sprachproben (Berlin, 1864 ; 4th ed., 1885 ),
  • "Germania antiqua" (explanation of "Germania" by Tacitus , Berlin, 1873 )

and especially the Deutsche Altertumskunde (Berlin, 1870 - 1891 ).

He also supervised the publication Das deutsche Heldenbuch (Berlin, 1866 - 1870 ), for which he himself processed Laurin (section: Berlin, 1871 ).
