Hans Modrow ( German: Hans Modrow ; born January 27, 1928 , Jazenitz , Prussia , Germany ) is a German politician. Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the GDR , member of the SED since 1949 (since 1958 - candidate member of the Central Committee, since 1967 - member of the Central Committee) [4] , later the PDS and the Left Party . The last communist head of the government of the GDR.

Biography
Hans Modrov was born in Prussian Pomerania (now the territory of Poland ) in January 1928. After graduation, during World War II , he was trained as a machinist and at the age of 17 went to the front.
In 1945 he served in Volkshturm , was captured, and until 1949 was in captivity in the USSR . [5] After returning from captivity, he worked as a machinist at the depot and quickly began his career as a party functionary.
In 1952 he was sent to study in Moscow in the Komsomol school, which he graduated in 1953. He graduated from the Higher Party School of the Central Committee of the SED (1957), the Higher School of Economics (1961). Since 1957 - Member of the People's Chamber of the GDR . He worked in the Union of Free German Youth , district and district committees of the SED, headed the agitation and propaganda department of the SED Central Committee; in November-December 1989, he was a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED [4] . In 1987, Hans Modrov was one of the possible successors of the SED leader.
From November 1989 to April 1990, Modrov served as Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the GDR. With his statement in the People's Chamber, there was only one vote against that filed by Margot Honecker, the wife of the previously displaced head of the GDR, Erich Honecker. Later Modrov was a member of the Bundestag and the European Parliament . Honorary Chairman of the Party of Democratic Socialism since February 1990 [4] . He was one of the reformers in the leadership of the GDR, with an understanding of Gorbachev’s publicity policy.
Personal Life
He was married to Anne-Maria Straubing, who passed away in 2003. He has two daughters with whom he lives in Berlin .
