According to the old administrative division, it was part of the province of Traz-u-Montish and Altu-Douro . Included in the economic and statistical subregion of Altu-Traz-us-Montes , which is part of the Northern region . The population is 2.4 thousand inhabitants (village), 10.6 thousand inhabitants (municipality). It covers an area of 694.68 km².
