Jeanne-Batista de Lewin is the daughter of a noble but impoverished French family. The family intends to marry her with the expectation that the future husband of a beautiful girl helped to improve the financial condition of the family. A suitable candidate for the role of the spouse becomes Count Alessandro de Veroa, the court of the King of Piedmont. But this marriage turns out to be not only profitable, but also happy, since young people enter it through mutual love.
Soon, the couple arrives at her husband's homeland, in Piedmont. Alessandro enjoys the mercy of King Vittorio Amadeo , the ruler of an outstanding one who achieved considerable influence for his small kingdom, balancing between France and Austria, in Europe. The king himself is struck by the meeting with the young Countess Veruah - she is not only young, beautiful, but also sincere, intelligent and totally devoted to her husband. The king, who gives himself only to the state, for many years has denied himself personal happiness and is faithful to his unloved, but worthy spouse. Countess Veruah takes possession of the king’s heart and becomes the subject of his passion. Zhanna cannot fail to notice the heightened interest in herself on the part of the monarch, but she tries to avoid Vittorio Amadeo, especially since she just gave birth to a son. However, the surrounding people are starting to push the young woman to surrender to the monarch's harassment ... Jeanne resists and asks for support from her husband.
King Verona gives a diplomatic mission in Madrid, Jeanne is happy about the upcoming departure, but her husband forbids her to follow her, because she is not strong after giving birth, it is dangerous to take the baby with you, and you cannot leave one, and the graph’s mission is secret. On the already openly expressed concerns of the young woman about the increased attention from the king, Alessandro replies that he is confident in Jeanne and trusts her with the honor of his family. However, after the graph’s departure, it turns out that not only the courtiers, but also the members of the de Verois family, believe that Jeanne must submit to the “duty” and surrender to the king.
Vittorio Amadeo himself comes to the countess and confesses her feelings. He loves her, but does not intend to take it by force, he will wait, he promises her his love and the highest position near him. Jeanne rejects the king, and he leaves the country in the mountain in the country palace of Rivoli, where he intends to stay until Jeanne arrives to him herself.
After the King’s departure, the pressure of her husband’s relatives on Zhanna is increasing - the mother-in-law and Uncle Alessandro openly rebuff the young woman, they even take away her son, sending him to the village. Finally, the queen herself asks Joan to “regret” her royal spouse. But Jeanne holds on, remembering that her husband believes in her virtue. She is waiting for his return, but when Alessandro finally arrives - he expresses his surprise that Jeanne is still at home ... Countess Verua with horror realizes that her husband was fully aware why his departure was needed, and he himself was ready to give his suzerain a wife .
To the depths of her soul, struck by the betrayal of her beloved, Jeanne decides to break with him. At night, in a thunderstorm, she goes to Vittorio Amadeo to the palace of Rivoli and appears soaked from head to toe, but willing to stay with the king. At the same time, she sets forth the conditions for her “capitulation”: the members of the family of de Verois should be deprived of all court posts, sent into exile; Count Alessandro, on the contrary, must remain at court and observe the cohabitation of his wife with the king; the house of the Counts de Verois, under whose roof Jeanne was so happy, must be burned with all the furniture, linens and clothing. Jeanne does not want to take anything from her old life with her. She fell, but those who pushed her to the edge - will not get anything but shame and opals.
Soon, Jeanne becomes the most influential woman in the kingdom. She seems to be reborn - the place of a slightly shy and naive young woman is occupied by a calculating and cold favorite. Any desire of her is satisfied, the king showered her with expensive gifts and even allows him to interfere in the meetings of his Cabinet. However, their personal relationship remains a mystery to all - Vittorio Amadeo loves his beloved, she, giving herself to him and even taking advantage of it, never opens her heart and soul to her lover ...
