Contrary to what is often claimed, the first full-length animated film in the history of cinema (see below), Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs overshadows its predecessors due to the influence it had on audiences in the United States and internationally, thanks the work of many artists at Disney Studios. Considered by many to be a masterpiece, the film also marks a stage in animation and even “seventh art” thanks to the technical and artistic innovations developed and used for this film. A production budget of $ 1.48 million set a record for the time. The investments made by the company founded by Walt Disney were largely rewarded by the proceeds from the release and so far, which makes the film an undeniable success.

Synopsis

A book opens, entitled “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” and a voice narration. He explains that Snow White is a princess living with her conceited and vicious stepmother, Queen . Angry and envious of the beauty of Snow White, she made her work as a servant and wear tattered clothes. The queen daily asks her magic mirror: “Who has overshadowed the whole world with beauty?” And likes to hear in response that she herself.

The action takes place when once the Queen asks her mirror, and the latter replies that the most beautiful in the kingdom is now Snow White. A little later, when she washed the castle stairs and sang, she was seen by the prince, who, blinded, sang to her about his love. The Queen then orders her faithful hunter to bring Princess Snow White to the forest and kill her. In evidence of death, she asks to bring her heart to the casket. But the hunter at the last moment lowers the knife and advises Snow White to hide from the wrath of the Queen in the forest, and in the box brings the heart of the killed boar.

On the run to escape the fate reserved for her by the evil stepmother, the princess is lost and scared in the forest. Fear turns bizarre trees into frightening, aggressive creatures, and Snow White falls in tears. Forest animals come closer, calming her by singing. She asks them for refuge, they lead her to a house located in a clearing, lost in the forest. No owners. She discovers seven small chairs around the table and imagines that it is the home of seven orphaned children. The cottage is dirty, dusty. Snow White decided to clean it in the hope that its inhabitants would agree to place it. With the help of forest animals, she removes dust, washes dishes and clothes.

Residents of the house, seven adult gnomes named Umnik, Grumbler, Veselchak, Sonya, Skromnik, Chihun and Prostachok, work in a diamond mine; at five, they leave work and return home with a cheerful whistle. Meanwhile, Snow White, tired, falls asleep in the room upstairs. Upon returning, the seven dwarves noticed that their house was busy, and thought that someone had invaded it. Worried, they timidly enter, discover a clean house and clean dishes, believe that the monster has fallen asleep upstairs, but finally find a young woman lying across three beds. Princess Snow White wakes up and the gnomes introduce themselves. They gladly accept her as a guest. She serves them the cooked dinner, having first forced her to wash her hands. After lunch, they play music and sing; she dances with them and tells her story. Snow White goes upstairs to sleep upstairs, makes a prayer; seven gnomes are sleeping below.

On the same day, the Queen again asks her mirror who is the most beautiful in the kingdom. The magic mirror tells her that Snow White is still alive and informs her of the place where she lives. The enraged Queen prepares a potion that turns her into an old woman and decides to offer the princess a poisoned apple that will immerse her in the dream of eternal death, the spell will be broken only by the first kiss of her handsome prince, the man she loves.

The next morning, when the seven dwarfs went to work in the mine, Snow White made a plum cake. She does not distrust the old woman and the evil witch, who comes into the house and offers her a magic apple that can fulfill her every desire. She bites off a piece and falls dead. Warned by forest animals, the gnomes return to their hut and arrange a witch hunt. As the storm rages, she runs away, cornered on a rocky spur and tries to push a stone at her pursuers. Lightning strikes a cliff, breaking the rocky spur on which she stood, causing her to fall into the abyss.

Alas, it is too late for Snow White, who, bewitched by the eternal sleep of a poisoned apple, seems dead. The seven dwarfs refused to bury her body and instead made her a glass coffin, decorated with gold, placed in a forest glade. As the seasons change, they gather together with forest animals near the body of Princess Snow White.

However, the prince was everywhere looking for the one he was in love with. Learning about the fate of a young woman in an eternal dream, he reached a clearing where the seven dwarfs kept a glass coffin, and found that the girl buried there was none other than Snow White. Considering her dead, he gives her a farewell kiss. But the first kiss of love broke the spell that prevented the princess from awakening. The animals and the seven dwarfs joyfully dance when Snow White wakes up. The prince puts her on his white horse and takes her to his castle. The last page of the book indicates that they lived happily ever after.

Cartoon Creation

Contrary to popular belief, the first full-length animated film in the history of cinema is not Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but the cartoon of Argentinean director Quirino Cristiani and producer Federico Valle, the Apostle , filmed in 1917 [13] . Later, in 1931 , Cristiani created the first full-length sound cartoon called “Peludópolis” [13] .

Thus, these two films prove that “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” is not the first full-length animated film in the world [13] . However, Snow White differs from Apostle in that the film has sound and color. To create color in the film, Walt Disney used the Technicolor process, first used by him in a short film from the Silly Symphonies series, Flowers and Trees , and a future studio exclusive until 1934 [14] , as well as other technologies, such as a multi-faceted camera and rotoscoping [14] .

Rewards

  • 1938 - film nomination for an Academy Award for Best Film Music [15] [16] .
  • 1939 - Walt Disney wins the Academy Award for "innovation and outstanding achievements in the field of animation" [16] . For the creation of "Snow White" Disney also receives eight Oscars: one large and seven small. The young star Shirley Temple , who at that time was ten years old, handed him these awards.
  • 1983 - Award " Young Actor " [17] .
