Ben Wilson (Jeff Diniels), whose wife died some time ago as a result of a car accident, returns with his daughter Hilary (Ariana Richards) to his native town of Gringlen, where he buys an old house on the outskirts of the city, which he is restoring with his daughter. Suddenly, the local bus driver Oscar arrives with a group of tourists from "Southern California", the head of the group asks to rent out a room for them, rejecting the offer to stay in a large hotel in the city center. Soon Wilson notices that his new guests behave strangely, and Oscar notices that, despite the fact that they are tourists, they do not even have cameras with them to take pictures. Shortly after the lodgers broke up into their rooms, another stranger from a group called Kyush (David Well) appeared, Ben noticed a thin layer of ash on his clothes. After the tragedy, the city is almost completely destroyed, and Ben's daughter dies a day later from a gas explosion. Trying to save her, Ben returns to the past and tries to take his daughter out of the city, but his father’s father, a local judge, whose powers are very large, has his own plans, because no one realizes about the impending catastrophe.
Ben’s suspicions intensify the next day, after Kewesh gets into a small accident while walking around the city, he helps him, and Kewsch drops his passport, looking at which Ben sees stamps of various places in the US and dates between which are decades. The local doctor shows X-ray images of a pen showing a foreign object embedded in the skull. After leaving the doctor, Wilson directly asks Kewshu who he is and why the stamps and dates coincide with famous accidents, natural disasters, including the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the Hindenberg crash, and the eruption of St. Helena, hence the ashes clothes of an intruder. Kews explains nothing, only suggests that Ben leave the city immediately and not return until he is sure that it is safe.
Meanwhile, in secret from Ben, the father of his wife, Judge Caldwell (George Murdoch), because he blames Ben for the death of his daughter, seeks to prove that he is a bad father. After returning home, Ben meets a judge, who threatens him with arrest, he leaves and stops at a local hotel. He suggests that the “tourists” turn out to be time travelers, and they did not come here for sightseeing, but to witness a certain catastrophe, as part of a big tour of the past, after Ben loses consciousness.
Late in the evening, Ben finds Oscar and helps to return to the house to find out what should happen, why tourists came, but a minute later the city is hit by a large meteorite, which practically destroys the city. Ben finds his daughter alive, but on his way to the city, he discovers that the hotel has been destroyed and many of his friends have died, and at this time tourists are walking around. Ben and his daughter all night helping the victims of the disaster, in the local school where the temporary assistance center was located.
When Ben and Oscar return to the guest house the next day, Ben is horrified to discover that, although the tourists are gone, their luggage is still there. He and Oscar find them in an abandoned factory outside the city, Ben realizes that they are waiting for a new catastrophe to happen in the school. Tourists try to hold him, but he eludes them, hoping to save the life of his daughter Hilary. Meanwhile, the workers of those services accidentally damage the gas pipeline in the school, which leads to a powerful explosion and destroys the school, as a result many people die, including daughter Ben and Kych.
When he awoke, Ben discovers that he was taken by tourists, and a certain official came to investigate temporary violations arising from Ben’s activities. All temporary excursions were stopped. Ben accuses the official of inhumanity, asks him to fix everything, to return his daughter, but he is adamant, but Ben manages to pull off Kych's passport.
After examining his passport, Ben finds a device for time travel, he returns last night and tries to save his daughter and citizens from a falling meteorite and the explosion that followed. He tries to take Hillary out of the judge's house, but he is caught and thrown into prison, which will soon be destroyed. However, he convinces the deputy to allow him one phone call and warn himself in the hotel. The other Ben helps him out of prison and together they try to warn people by ringing the bells of the old church.
Ben leaves his daughter with himself and leaves, but he meets a temporary affairs officer who is back and intends to send Ben back to his time interval. He warns Ben not to interfere anymore and threatens him, in case of insubordination, to return to the past and eliminate all the changes created by Ben, but Ben in turn tells him that if his words had a meaning, then his colleagues would have done everything.
In the final scene, we see Hilary, who meets new guests, in an already rebuilt guest house, and Ben reads the old love letters of his late wife, and suddenly he dissolves, and Hillary suddenly hears someone play the piano of her mother.
