Melissa Joan Catherine Hart was born April 18, 1976 in Smithtown in New York State (but raised in Saville) and was the first of five children Paula Joan Woji and Bill William Hart. Mother was a producer and manager of novice performers, father was a supplier of shellfish and an entrepreneur. After Melissa, three more daughters were born in the family, Tricia Louise, Elizabeth Lee and Emily Ann, and one son Brian. Melissa's maternal grandfather, Stanley John Woji, was a navy veteran and Catholic. In 1990, Paula and Bill divorced, and the children moved with their mother to New York itself. In 1994, Paula married television director Leslie Emerick Gilliams and from this marriage, Melisa has three more uterine younger sisters: Alexander, Samantha Leslie and Mackenzie. Melissa was named after the Allman Brothers song of the same name, and Joan was given her middle name in honor of her maternal grandmother. Melissa's career began when she was 4 years old, and she was invited to appear in an advertisement for children's inflatable bathing toys.
