Story
The story of the Angel of Death , who decides to take a vacation from his usual duties in order to stay among people. For these purposes, he infuses the body of a tragically dead young man ( Brad Pitt ), who previously met in a cafe with Susan ( Claire Forlani ), daughter of media magnate William Perrish ( Anthony Hopkins ). He appears at his home on the eve of his 65th birthday.
Death makes a deal with Perrish: William will become his guide in the world of people, and Perrish's death will be postponed. The tycoon represents Death to his family and loved ones as Joe Black, but does not really explain who it is. Susan, who was present at the dinner, was surprised and delighted to meet the very young man whom she met in a cafe and who she liked very much. Joe Black is clumsily but enthusiastically immersed in the world of things, delicious food and human relations. Once in the human body, the Angel of Death begins to feel something that in its true incarnation is not able to feel - he falls in love with Susan. She reciprocates him, although she is surprised by the cardinal change in his behavior. Seeing an open manifestation of their feelings, Perrish begins to get nervous.
Joe accompanies Perrish everywhere, including at a meeting of directors where the tycoon’s unfriendly merger with competitors is planned. Perrish strongly opposed the merger. One of the board members, Drew, wants to crank up the deal behind Perrish. Having assembled a meeting of directors, Drew accuses Perrish of not being able to manage the company and dismisses him. Perrish cannot explain to his subordinates what Joe is doing next to him and, taking advantage of this weakness, Drew forces him to make a decision to resign and accept the merger.
There comes the day of the celebration of the anniversary, which is held with great fanfare. Soon, Joe tells the tycoon that he fell in love with his daughter and decided to take her with him. Perrish manages to persuade Death not to do this, but in return he transfers the deadline for the completion of the transaction to the end of the anniversary celebration. Joe finds Susan among the guests and tells her that immediately after the holiday he should leave forever, and almost admits who he really is.
Before the anniversary, Perrish's brother-in-law , Queens, confesses to the father-in-law that he inadvertently betrayed him, giving Drew the necessary information for Perrysh's resignation. Joe suddenly offers Perrish to get rid of Drew and promises to postpone the tycoon’s death for this. During the meeting, Joe appears to be a secret agent of the tax service and threatens Drew that the transaction contains a crime, and he may be behind bars. Drew, under pressure from threats, withdraws his demand for the removal of Perrish from his post as head of the company.
Celebrations end with fireworks. The hero of the day says goodbye to the guests and to his daughter. Together with Joe, they go up the stairs leading into the park and hide from view, but after a while, one Joe comes out to meet the anxious Susan who has gone behind them. He reports that after meeting in a cafe he does not remember anything. According to his behavior, Susan understands that in front of her is the same guy from the cafe that she liked so much, but sadly understands that the Joe whom she recognized recently will never be there.
