International Day of Monuments and Sites ( World Heritage Day ) is celebrated on April 18 . It was established in 1983 by the Assembly of the International Council for the Protection of Monuments and Sites ( ICOMOS ) established at UNESCO in order to draw public attention to the protection and preservation of world cultural heritage. For the first time, at the interstate level, the day of monuments and historical places was celebrated on April 18, 1984 .
As part of the celebration of World Heritage Day, conferences are held on the preservation and protection of cultural heritage, as well as other events. Some museums on this day (as well as on International Museum Day ) can be viewed without buying an admission ticket, for free. Visitors can also visit architectural complexes and historical buildings, which are closed for visits on ordinary days [1] .
