During the years of the Great Patriotic War, about 900,000 people served in the 6th Army (on average, the army in the period of the Great Patriotic War was 80,000-90000 personnel). Formed several times.
The abbreviated name used in official documents and literature on the period of the 6th Army of the Red Army is 6 A. In the Armed Forces of the Union, 6 A was deployed in the periods, years: 1939-1945, 1952-1998. In the Russian Armed Forces exists since 2010.

First Formation
Formed by renaming on September 28, 1939 of the Eastern Army Group into the 6th Army of the Ukrainian Front . The Army’s Military Council included the commander of the army, Commander F. I. Golikov (09/28/1939-July 1940), a member of the Military Council of the Army Brigadier Commissar G. N. Zakharychev, chief of staff of the army [2] [3] [4] .
September 17, 1939 in the Kiev Special Military District on the basis of the Eastern (initially - from 07.26.1938 to 09.16.1939 Vinnitsa Army Group , then from 16 to 24.09.1939 Volochysky Army Group , from 24 to 28.09.1939 Eastern Army Group , 09/28/1939 6th Army) of an army group of forces as part of the Ukrainian Front to participate in the Liberation Campaign in Western Ukraine and Western Belarus [5] .
By September 28, the troops of the Eastern Army Group, and now the 6th Army, had advanced: the troops of the 2nd Cavalry Corps passed Zholkev, Rava-Ruseka, Nemirov, Magerov, Lyubachuv, Rudka; the troops of the 17th Rifle Corps moved to the demarcation line (on September 25th they came to the Yanov, Dobrostany area; on September 28th they entered Lubaczów) [4] .
The 14th Cavalry Division of the 2nd Cavalry Corps was ordered to move to Tomaszow, Zamosc as part of the 5th Army . The 2nd Cavalry Corps (3 cd and 5 cd, 24 Ltbr) reached the area of Bukovina, Dobcha, Dzikuv and the command began to organize the protection of the demarcation line - set patrols on the San river. The 24th light tank brigade reached Tseshanuv on September 28 [4] .

September 29th
At 8.00 the headquarters of the Ukrainian Front received order No. 625 from the command of the Red Army to stop troops at the reached lines until 18.00 [4] .
Cavalry patrols of 2 kk carried the service of guarding the demarcation line. At 9:00, the 99th Infantry Division of the 17th Infantry Corps entered Przemysl and the division command began to take over the city from the German command. By evening, the divisions of the 17th Rifle Corps reached the Bukovina, Dobcha, and Tarnogrud districts, and replaced parts of the 2nd Cavalry Corps to guard the demarcation line along the San River. Thus, the troops of the 96th, 97th and 99th rifle divisions of the 17th rifle corps of the 6th army reached the middle course of the San River from Bilgoraj to Przemysl [4] .
On September 30, the Military Council of the Ukrainian Front issued an order to the commanders of formations on the approximate border line established by the Soviet-German agreement of September 28, and focused on October 5 on the beginning of the withdrawal of troops located west of this line [4] .
On October 2, the army was part of the Ukrainian Front [4] .

At the end of the campaign on September 28, 1939 [6] the field control of the army was disbanded, and the troops were given to the KOVO .
At the beginning of World War II, the army was deployed as part of the South-Western Front in the Lviv direction at the border of Krystynopol , Grabovets . The army included the 6th , 37th rifle, 4th and 15th mechanized and 5th cavalry corps , 4th and 6th fortified areas , a number of artillery and other units. At the same time, the 37th Rifle Corps located more than 100 km from the border did not participate in the hostilities of the outbreak of war, and did not appear in the headquarters reports [7] . On July 9, the defense front of the 6th Army was broken. The enemy reached the city of Zhytomyr on the right flank and the city of Berdichev on the left flank. The 6th Army included the 7th, 36th, 37th and 49th Rifle Corps, the 4th and 15th Mechanized Corps. On July 27-28, the rear of the second echelon of the 6th Army with battles were withdrawn to the city of Dnepropetrovsk - 820 vehicles, 2,360 people. The departure was carried out in four columns under the command: Ryumik ( military technician of the 2nd rank ), Prikhodko ( quartermaster of the 2nd rank ), Polyakov ( quartermaster of the 1st rank ), Denisov (quartermaster of the 1st rank).
The command post of the army was in Lipovets . The army troops defended the front to the north, as the enemy went to the rear of the 6th and 12th armies and moved from Squira to the south. Far in the south, the enemy broke through the defenses of the 18th army and moved to the city of Gaysin and the city of Uman , bypassing the 6th and 12th armies from the south [9] .
On August 2, 1941, during the Battle of Uman, together with parts of the 12th Army, was surrounded. From August 1 to 8, up to 11,000 people and 1015 vehicles with military equipment from the 6th and 12th Army left the encirclement [10] . The command of the army, including Lieutenant General I.N. Muzychenko , was captured or died. On August 10, 1941, the army was disbanded.
Second Formation
It was founded on August 25, 1941 on the basis of the 48th Rifle Corps . The army included the 169th , 226th , 230th , 255th , 273rd , 275th rifle , 26th and 28th cavalry , 8th tank , 6th Army Air Force 44th Fighter Aviation Division and other units. As part of the Southern Front, she defended the border along the left bank of the Dnieper in the area northwest of Dnepropetrovsk.
Since September 27, 1941, it fought during the defense of Donbass as part of the South-Western Front . In January 1942, she participated in the Barvenkovo-Lozovsky offensive operation , in May 1942 in the Kharkov operation . After encirclement on May 25, 1942 , during heavy fighting, units of the army managed to break through to their troops. June 10, 1942 the army was disbanded.
6th Army Air Force
Third Formation
It was founded on July 7, 1942 on the basis of the 6th reserve army of the reserve of the Supreme Command . The army included the 45th , 99th , 141st , 160th , 174th , 212nd , 219th and 309th rifle divisions, the 141st rifle brigade and other units. Since July 9, 1942 as part of the Voronezh Front . In July 1942, she participated in the Voronezh-Voroshilovgrad strategic defensive operation . In August, she led offensive battles, during which she liberated Korotoyak and captured two bridgeheads on the right bank of the Don . Since December 19, 1942 it became part of the South-Western Front of the 2nd formation. Since October 20, 1943 as part of the 3rd Ukrainian Front . In the winter and spring of 1944, the army participated in the Nikopol-Krivorozh , Bereznegovato-Snigirev and Odessa offensive operations. In June 1944, troops of the 6th Army were transferred to the 37th and 46th armies, and its field control was withdrawn to the front reserve, and from July 18 to the reserve of the Supreme Command .
In December 1944, the army received part of the troops from the 3rd Guards and 13th armies and was transferred to the 1st Ukrainian Front with the occupation of borders in the Sandomierz region. In January-February 1945, the army participated in the Sandomierz-Silesian and Lower Silesian offensive operations. From mid-February to May 6, 1945, the army fought to eliminate the encircled enemy forces in the fortress city of Breslau .
In September 1945, in connection with the demobilization of the USSR, the army was disbanded, its field directorate turned to staff the management of the Oryol Military District of the USSR Armed Forces.
Fourth Formation
On the basis of the 31st Rifle Corps (31 sk), in January - April 1952, the 6th Army was formed in the city of Murmansk , on the basis of the directive of the USSR Minister of War No. org / 1/7813, dated January 5, 1952. The formation became part of the Northern Military District (SVO). In March 1960, in connection with the abolition of the Navy, the association was transferred to the Leningrad Military District (LenVO).
Since July 23, 1960, the field administration of the 6th Army in the city of Murmansk was disbanded, and on the basis of the abolished administration of the Northern Military District, the management of the 6th Army in the city of Petrozavodsk was formed . By the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 15, 1974 No. 5365-USh, the 6th Combined Arms Army was awarded the Order of the Red Banner .
