Biography
The eldest son of Karl Ernst Hess , a Bavarian copper engraver, from whom he received his first lessons in artistic mastery, which he later improved at the Munich Academy of Arts.
He participated in the campaign of 1813-1814 against Napoleon I ; after that he traveled to Vienna, Switzerland, and Italy, and finally made himself a workshop in Munich. Initially, he painted small scenes from the soldiers and common people life, and only later began to perform large and multi-figured battle paintings.
In 1831 he accompanied King Otton to Greece, after which he depicted his arrival at Nafplion and the solemn entry into Athens (in two paintings in the Munich New Pinakothek); the result of his trip to Greece were, in addition, 39 paintings representing the main episodes of the struggle of the Greeks for independence and performed by him, in collaboration with Nilsson, in the arcades of the palace garden, in Munich.
In 1839, he visited Russia with the aim of gathering on the spot materials for twelve large paintings ordered by Emperor Nicholas I, depicting the main battles of 1812 (the battles of Smolensk, Borodino, Valutin, Klyastitsy, Krasny, Tarutino, Maloyaroslavets, Polotsk, Losmina, Vyazma, Krasnoi and Berezina).
The works of this artist are notable for their vividness of composition, an excellent characteristic of individual figures and complex groups, often of great drama, a conscientious performance in the smallest detail.
Among the best of his works, above mentioned: "The Battle of Austerlitz", "Catching horses in Wallachia", "The Robber Barbone fighting off the Carabinieri" (all three in the Munich New Pinakothek), "The Battle of Arsi-sur-Ob", "Defense Kinzig Bridge near Hanau "(1820)," Austrian Bivouac "(1823)," The Battle of Wörgl "and others.
