Woody Harrelson as Billy Hoyle, a talented basketball player who makes his living as basketball bets on the street because no one expects the White American to play well. His “deception” provokes his opponents even more, because Billy does not hide his ability to play basketball, on the contrary, he demonstrates it in every possible way. But Black’s belief that the “white guy”, “the college boy” cannot play well is unshakable. In the opening scene of the film, Wesley Snipes' character Sidney Deane loses the competition to Billy in long-range shots in front of his friends.
Billy gets the win and returns home, where his girlfriend Gloria ( Rosie Perez ) is waiting for him, who cramming questions and answers to the Jeopardy quiz ! . Billy's winnings are added to the bank with cash, to which they raise money to pay off the local bandits, the Stucci brothers. At this moment, Sydney appears, sees the can and invites Billy to cheat trusting people together, guaranteeing much higher earnings. In parallel, Sidney is looking for a new home for his family in a quiet area and he needs money.
The couple successfully acts in the field of deception, but at the very moment when Billy’s money is at stake in the next game, the game fails and they lose. Billy is desperate, but Gloria, having heard Billy’s story that “Sidney had a hard day and often missed”, realizes that Sidney himself cheated them. Billy refuses to demand money back, citing the fact that since he lost, then he lost. They go to Sydney’s home, where they find him in company with recent rivals. While Billy finds out the relationship, Gloria and his wife Sidney in the kitchen settle issues and make both guys perform together at the city 2x2 basketball tournament, which they win. On the way back, Sydney jokingly teaches Billy. Billy instantly starts up and puts his win on the fact that he will be able to score on top with three attempts, but as a result he misses three times, and Billy is again aground. With the last money, he buys a Gloria quiz dress and goes home. Gloria collects her things and leaves, a fire starts in the hotel room, and the Stucci brothers appear, who also demand money and give Billy the last chance to get it.
Billy goes to Sydney, whose friend works as a security guard on television and can arrange for Gloria to get on the quiz. Two scientists play the quiz against Gloria, but she, having learned all the questions and answers, wins the first time $ 24,000. Billy breaks into her dressing room, they put up, and Gloria gives him money. Sydney is demanding his debt. The next tournament is held in the city, where the stars are performing - Eddie "King" Farouk and Duck Johnson. Gloria threatens that if Billy once again plays basketball for money, she will leave him. But Billy, under pressure from Sydney, agrees to take a chance, and in the final of the tournament they beat King and Duck. But Gloria leaves, and the Stucci brothers take the win.
