According to scriptwriter and director , he sketched the idea of a film in 1975 when he worked as an editor for the Navy in the Mojave Desert - once on a weekend he sat on a boulder and thought what would happen if something could move through the sand like a fish, and he could not get off the stone. Story
Valentin Val McKee ( Kevin Bacon ) and Earl Basset ( Fred Ward ) work as laborers in Perfection, Nevada, a small settlement on the site of a former mining community with only fourteen residents, including store owner Walter Chang ( Victor Wong ) and married couple Bert ( Michael Gross ) and Heather ( Riba MacIntyre ) Hammers. Also, student Ronda Lebek ( Finn Carter ) came here to practice seismic geology .
Val and Earl decided to leave Perfection and head to Bixby, the nearest town. On the way, they found the body of a deceased person who climbed to the top of the power mast and, apparently, sat there for several days. Somewhere else, the shepherd Old Fred and his flock of sheep are attacked by "invisible forces." Reaching his farm, Val and Earl discovered the remains of a sheep and dead Fred, located on the neck of the earth. Val and Earl return to Perfection, believing that the killer is free. They warn two road workers. After Val and Earl left, one of the workers stumbled upon something underground with a jackhammer. Ultimately, after an accident with an unknown creature, a collapse occurred and the road from the city was stoned.
Val and Earl, having learned that the phone is not working, go for help to Bixby, but encounter a rocky collapse. They return to Walter's store, where they find something like a snake caught on the rear axle of their truck.
The next morning, Val and Earl leave for help, this time on horseback. They discover that the doctor’s car is buried. The "snakes" attacked the doctor and his wife, killing both and dragging their car underground. Each such snake is only part of a huge underground monster. Discarded from their horses, friends run away. The monster follows them, Val and Earl jump into the trench, and the monster crashes into a concrete slab and dies. At this time, Ronda comes there. She determines that there are three more creatures in the area. They understand that creatures have extremely keen hearing and can find them through hesitation. Residents of the city do not believe them until the creatures eat the tires on the truck and kill Walter, who managed to give the monsters a name - hraboids, shortly before his death.
Hammers, returning to their home after a failed hunt for snake-like creatures, communicate with other people via CB radio , but the noise of the machine attracts the beast. Gammers kill him, but another monster eats tires on their car. Then the snakes overturn Nestor’s trailer and drag him away. Realizing that they needed to get out, Val and Earl came up with an escape plan, for which they decided to use a bulldozer and a semi-trailer with flat tires, believing that the bulldozer would be too heavy for the monsters.
Initially, the plan is successful, but then the bulldozer rolls over, falling into a pit trap dug by monsters on the way. Bert undermines one of the homemade bombs to scare off monsters, people manage to get to the pile of boulders. Monsters cannot dig boulders, but without food, water and a walkie-talkie they cannot sit for a long time. Heroes drop a bomb that one of the monsters catches to their death. However, his comrade spits out a bomb, falls directly onto a bunch of spare bombs. Val, Earl and Rhonda find themselves a few meters from the boulder, the monster blocks their path. Val takes the monster along to the edge of the cliff, the monster falls into the abyss and breaks.
Before leaving Ronda, Val does not dare to declare her love in any way, although she clearly expects this, but the urged Earle finally decides.
