Story
A remake of the 1948 classic Big Watch, based on the eponymous novel by Kenneth Fering .
US Navy officer Tom Farrell (Kevin Costner) meets a young woman at the ball, Susan Atwell (Sean Young). They become lovers, although Atwell is dating someone else. During his next trip, Farrell rescues a sailor from his ship during a storm and becomes famous. Learning about this, US Secretary of Defense David Bryce (Gene Hackman) takes him to Washington office in his office, while knowing that his chief consultant Scott Pritchard (Will Patton) is Farrell's old friend.
Bryce is trying to thwart the Phantom Sub project, which envisages the construction of huge submarines, which has strong political support. Farrell, by order of Bryce, should act as his direct liaison with the CIA to collect information that the USSR is working on such a project.
Farrell suspects that Bryce is Atwell's other lover, and Bryce, in turn, learns of Atwell's infidelity. In a quarrel, he slaps her and accidentally kills her - she falls from the covered balcony. Bryce is terrified of what he did, but Pritchard reassures him by saying that he is able to cover everything and blame someone else for Susan. They make up the story that Atwell actually killed the “mole” from the KGB, codenamed “Yuri”. Confident that Yuri does not exist, CIA Director Marshall (Fred Dalton Thompson) rejects Pritchard's candidacy as a suspect in the Atwell case, knowing that Pritchard is homosexual . Bryce appoints Farrell to lead the investigation, actually wanting to find his rival. Farrell, therefore, was in the position that he needed to catch himself. The main evidence in this case - the photograph depicting Farrell - was not fully manifested, its restoration requires lengthy computer processing. Farrell gets to work, trying to redirect his attention to Bryce. Pritchard comes with Farrell to the black woman Nina Beck, Atwell's friend, and, threatening her with deportation back to Africa , she tries to find out from whom Atwell met. Nina, who knows Farrell, does not betray him. Pritchard secretly instructs the special services to “take care” of Nina, but Farrell saves her. Meanwhile, Sam Hasselman walks to Pritchard, preoccupied with Farrell's request to slow down the restoration of the photograph. Pritchard listens and kills him. However, Farrell was the first to receive Bryce's communication evidence: a printout of his Atwell's gift registration. Bryce puts the blame on Pritchard, claiming he was jealous of Atwell. Pritchard, feeling betrayed, commits suicide .
Farrell comes to Atwell's grave when two unidentified men take him for interrogation. One of the investigators suddenly begins to speak with Farrell in Russian and Farrell answers the same. It turns out that Farrell is the real “Yuri”, and the investigator is his head from the KGB . Yuri / Farrell was sent to the United States as a teenager and became a “mole” in the Department of Defense . The KGB was aware of the affair between Bryce and Atwell, so Farrell was ordered to seduce Atwell to collect information from the Secretary of Defense. In the end, Farrell refuses to return to the Soviet Union and his curator permits him to leave, confident that he will return, since he has nowhere else to go.
