James Anthony (Jim) Sturgess ( born James Anthony "Jim" Sturgess ; born May 16, 1978, London , England ) is a British actor and singer [3] . He began his career in the mid -1990s with filming in TV shows. Fame brought him roles in the films " Twenty-One " and " Through the Universe " [4] .

The early years
Jim Sturgess was born on May 16, 1978 in London, but grew up in Farnham, Surrey, 40 miles southwest of London. In his youth, he spent most of his time riding on a skateboard, and founded his first musical group as soon as he was 15. Rehearsals were held with a friend in his father’s garage. The group gave performances wherever they turned a blind eye to the fact that the members of the collective were minors.
Jim first tried on the role of an actor when a local theater group organized an audition at his school to participate in a local play. Soon realizing that acting would allow him to skip school with ease, Sturgess went through an audition and got one of the roles in the play. Both the school leadership and parents admitted that the guy had talent, but he always preferred music rather than acting.
Jim moves to Manchester to enter Salford University, in the hope that this will give him the opportunity to organize another group, as well as get into the musical hangout of Manchester - the birthplace of many of his musical idols. In Manchester, he meets a group of ambitious aspiring actors and filmmakers, and his passion for acting flares up with renewed vigor. He begins to compose and perform his own plays and short films, and also organizes the show 'BUZZIN', which was based on his poetic readings. It is there that the acting agent finds him. Jim graduated from university in 1999 with a diploma in media and acting.
Career
The first notable role of Sturgess in the movie is Jude Feeney in the film Through the Universe , where he played with Evan Rachel Wood and Joe Anderson . The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on September 10, 2007. On February 19, 2008 the film “ Another of the Boleyn Clan ” was released, in which Sturgess played the role of George Boleyn . His partners on the set were Scarlett Johansson , Natalie Portman and Eric Bana . April 17, 2008, the premiere of the film " Twenty-One ", in which Jim played the main role. His hero is a mathematical genius who, thanks to his abilities, wins huge sums of money in a casino in Las Vegas . The film also starred Kate Bosworth , Lawrence Fishborn and Kevin Spacey .
In 2009, Sturgess played the role of Gavin Cossef in the movie “ Ferry, ” in which, in addition to him, Harrison Ford , Ray Liotta and Ashley Judd played. In the same year, he appeared in the film “ Fifty Walking Corpses ” by Kari Skogland, based on Martin McGarthland’s bestselling book of the same name, and in Philip Ridley ’s film “ Heartless ”. In 2010, Jim starred in The Way Home , directed by Peter Weir , based on a true story of a Polish officer who escaped from the Soviet Gulag during World War II . Also in 2010, Sturgess voiced the owl Soren in an animated 3D film directed by Zack Snyder Legends of the Night Watch .
In May 2010, Jim officially joined the cast of Lone Scherfig 's film “ One Day, ” based on the eponymous novel by David Nichols [5] . Filming ended on September 17, 2010 [6] , and the film itself was released in cinemas in August 2011. Also in 2010, along with Kirsten Dunst Sturgess, was shot in Montreal in the film “ Parallel Worlds ”. In 2013, the picture came out in a limited release for international distribution [7] [8] . After that, Sturgess was busy filming such films as Promised Land (2010) and Ashes (2011) [9] .
On September 9, 2012, the premiere of the science fiction film created by Tom Tykver and Lilly and Lana Wachowski - “ Cloud Atlas ”, in which Jim played a major role, took place. The film was shot from September 2011 to October 2012. Tom Hanks , Hugh Grant and Halle Berry acted as partners on the set. Also in 2012, Jim was busy working on two more films - the film directed by Giuseppe Tornatore “ Best Offer ”, which was shot in Prague , Vienna and in some cities in Italy . In addition to Sturgess, the main roles in it were played by Jeffrey Rush and Sylvia Hooks . The painting won the prestigious David di Donatello Award in the Best Film nomination. And in the fall, along with Isabelle Lucas and Chloe Sevigny, Jim starred in Los Angeles in the film "Tristan Petterson" Gentleman the Robber. This film became the official choice of the Tribeca Film Festival , where it premiered in 2014. In 2013, Sturgess was involved in the filming of three projects: The Resident of the Damned , directed by Brad Anderson , where Kate Beckinsale was the couple, London Fields, directed by Matthew Cullen, which was shot in London, and Daniel Alfredson’s Freddy Heineken’s Abduction, where besides Jim, Sam Worthington and Anthony Hopkins also played.
On June 5, 2016, the first episode of the series “ Feed the Beast ” was released about two friends who decide to open their own restaurant. In addition to Jim, the main role was played by the star of the series Friends , David Schwimmer .
Jim writes and performs his own music. For many years, he has been playing at Camden Music Center in London with bands such as Saint Faith and Dilated Spies. Sturgess also composes music for some of his films, including two tracks that he wrote and performed in The Crossing , and in collaboration with director Philip Ridley for the movie Heartless .
Personal life
In 2014, it became known that Sturgess was dating his partner in the movie Cloud Atlas , Pae Du Na [10] [11] . They broke up in March 2015 [12] .
Jim is 182 cm (5 feet and 11¾ inches) tall [13] .
