Story
Two girls, Thelma ( Gina Davis ) and her friend Louise ( Susan Sarandon ), want to go to the mountains to relax from their daily lives for the weekend. Louise works in a cafeteria as a waitress, Thelma is forced to sit at home under the oppression of her husband Derill ( Christopher MacDonald ) - a man of some power and rude. In the first country club, the drunken Thelma almost raped Harlan ( Timothy Carhart ), but Louise kills him.
Girls are hiding from the crime scene. The next morning, Louise decides to flee to Mexico . She calls her boyfriend Jimmy ( Michael Madsen ) and asks her to send her all her savings to the nearest bank. She hands the map to Telma and tells them to consider the best route from Oklahoma to Mexico, bypassing Texas .
At one of the stops, Thelma meets a pretty "student" Jay Dee ( Brad Pitt ), who supposedly goes to the university by hitchhiking . She asks Louise to take a companion, but she refuses. Soon they again pick him up at the next stop. Louise in Oklahoma City goes to the bank for a transfer, but meets Jimmy there. He hands her an envelope of money, which Louise hands Thelma for storage. In the evening, at the hotel, Jimmy tries to find out from Louise what story she has stuck in, and also presents her with a ring and makes an offer, but Louise refuses him because she does not want to get him into what happened and realizes that she cannot return her past life. Jimmy flies back home. Thelma spends the night with Jay Dee, which is reported to her friend the next morning, but it soon turns out that the guy stole all the money from the girls and disappeared. Meanwhile, the police have already begun looking for friends.
Thelma and Louise do not know what to do, but move on. Thelma robs the store. Police catch Jay Dee, who reports that Thelma hinted at them that they would flee to Mexico ; then they put on a wiretap Thelma's home phone; interrogate Jimmy. The girls are aware of everything, Louise is talking to the police on the phone, investigator Hal Slokam ( Harvey Keitel ), who sincerely wants to help the girls, tries to persuade her to surrender to the police, but the conversation does not lead to anything, and her friends decide that she needs to move to Mexico faster.
On the track on the road to the Grand Canyon for speeding, they are stopped by a policeman, but Thelma threatens him with a gun, the girls shoot his radio and put the policeman in the trunk.
From time to time, they meet a trucker on the highway who shouts obscenity to them every time, and in the third meeting the girls finally decide to deal with him: when they stop, they offer him an apology, but when he refuses, they shoot him with a fuel tanker semi-trailer. The truck explodes and the girls hide, leaving the trucker alone in the middle of the prairie.
Continuing their journey, the girls soon notice several police cars and decide to hide. But, rising to the plateau, they see that they are being followed by a chase: at least a dozen police cars, as well as a helicopter, but Louise breaks away from them. Police officers overtake them on the edge of a steep cliff and surround on three sides. The Sloks are trying to peacefully resolve the situation, but snipers do not lower their weapons. The girls face a dilemma: surrender to the police or commit suicide, but stay free. They kiss and with a smile and tears on their faces, clutching their hands tightly, at full speed they direct the car to the Canyon.

Work on the film
The role of Thelma was proposed by Cher , but she rejected it. George Clooney five times auditioned for the role of Jay Dee, but the director chose to give the role of the young "cowboy" to another little-known actor at that time named Brad Pitt .
For an erotic scene in which Brad Pitt and Gina Davis take part, director Ridley Scott wanted to pick a double for the star. Upon learning of his plans, Davis insisted that she should star in this scene herself.
Five identical 1966 Ford Thunderbird convertibles were shot in the film: Auto Star, a car with built-in tripods for cameras, a spare car and two stunt cars for performing stunts .
