Tetela del Volcán ( Spanish: Tetela del Volcán ) is the city and administrative center of the eponymous municipality in the Mexican state of Morelos . The population according to the 2010 census was 10 199 people.

The city is located on the slope of the Popocatepetl volcano.
The name comes from the Astekian Tetella or Tetetla , which can be translated as rocky terrain .
The first mention dates back to 1503, at the time of the fall of Tenochtitlan .
