Masatepec ( Spanish: Mazatepec ) is a village and administrative center of the eponymous municipality in the Mexican state of Morelos . The population according to the 2010 census was 4,572 people.

The name Mazatepec comes from the Nahuatl language and can be translated as: deer on the mountain .
The first mention of Masatepek dates back to the year 603 , when the Toltecs , who came on a pilgrimage to Khochikalko , founded a settlement here  .
