On January 10, 2007, he finished second in the NBA in terms of absolute block shots over his career, beating Karim Abdul-Jabbar and second only to Hakim Oladzhyuvon . A native of the Bast people, speaks English , Spanish , Portuguese , French and five other African languages. He also has US citizenship. On April 21, 2009, after a knee injury in a playoff game against the Portland Trail Blazers , Mutombo announced the end of his basketball career [2] .

Mutombo is actively involved in charity work. In 1997, he organized the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, whose greatest achievement is the construction of a modern hospital in Kinshasa . For his activities, Mutombo has received numerous awards, including the J. Walter Kennedy Prize , Laureus World Sports Awards , President's Volunteer Service Award. In 2007, for his services, he was invited to the annual Address “On the Situation of the Country” by US President George W. Bush , in which the president noted: “We are proud to call him the son of Congo and a US citizen” [3] .
Early years
Dikembe Mutombo was born on June 25, 1966 in the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Kinshasa . His father, Samuel, was the school principal, and his mother, Byamba Marie, was involved in raising ten children (8 boys and 2 girls), the seventh of which was Dikembe [4] [5] [6] . His family had an average income, so he lived in fairly decent conditions, attended the school where his father worked, and went to the Protestant church every Sunday with his family. From early childhood, his father taught children how to do business and make money. Therefore, Dikembe with his brothers and sisters sold bread, chewing gum and sweets on the street [7] . At school, he was involved in athletics and martial arts, played soccer as a goalkeeper . There was also a basketball hoop in the schoolyard, but Mutombo did not like basketball and never thought that he would start playing it [6] . Although everyone in his family was tall, Dikembe outgrew his family members and at school his height exceeded 2 meters [5] .
Georgetown University
In 1987, Mutombo came to the United States to study at Georgetown University for a scholarship from the United States Agency for International Development , planning to become a doctor and return home to open his practice. The president of the university invited Dikembe to join the basketball team, but since Mutombo was an exchange student, he could only join it next year. Mutombo met with the coach of the Hoyas University team John Thompson and told that he catches the ball well, as he was a goalkeeper in childhood. The coach suggested that Dikembe work out with the team and found that he really catches the ball, jumps high, but has problems with physical preparation [8] . The following year, Mutombo officially joined the team. [6] They established good relations with Thompson, and Dickembe treated him like a father [6] . Due to a typographical error, the newspaper wrote that Mutombo was 155 cm tall, and since he was little known on the campus, everyone was very surprised who the coach took to the team. After leaving Patrick Ewing University in 1985, Georgetown Hoyas experienced difficulties with the center. Grady Mateen was ineffective, and Ben Gilleri often went for replacements for only a few minutes due to a poor game in the attack. In the same 1988, another center team appeared in the university team - the best basketball player among schoolchildren of the previous year and in the future the second issue of the 1992 draft Alonzo Mourning . In the first season, Mutombo still did not know much about basketball, so he went mostly only for a substitution and spent on the court an average of only 11 minutes per game, gaining 3.9 points and making 3.3 rebounds. However, his hit rate from the game 70.7% was one of the best in the last 22 years at the university. In addition, in his debut season, he was able to make 75 block shots, including a record for the NCAA 12 block shots per game, which he made in a match against St. Johns University [8] [9] .
In the 1989/90 season, Mutombo improved his performance. Dikembe worked hard on himself, and his progress could not be overlooked [8] . The coach began to trust him more, and Mutombo began to leave in the starting lineup. Thompson created from two center duets, which the fans called Rejection row [8] , which can be translated from English as the “cancellation line”, implying the ability of this couple to make block shots and close approaches to their ring. In the season, Dikembe reached the starting five in 24 of 31 games, and his time on the court increased to 26 minutes, which allowed him to gain an average of 10.7 points and make 10.5 rebounds. Despite helping Dickembe, the team took off in the second round of the NCAA tournament. According to the results of the season, he was included in the first national team of all the stars of the conference [9] .
In the first game of the 1990/91 season, Mutombo made the third triple double in university history. In the match against Hawaii Loa, he scored 32 points, made 21 rebounds and 11 block shots. Dikembe set his record for performance in one game, gaining 34 points in a game against Jason State University. In 16 consecutive games, Mutombo was the leader of the rebound team, and in the final series of the conference for 3 games he scored 34 points and made 44 rebounds. According to the results of the season, Dikembe was included in the team of all the stars of the conference and in the All-American team. In just three years, from a person who had never before held a basketball in his hands, Mutombo turned into one of the most promising young centers [8] . During his appearances at Georgetown Hoyas, he averaged 9.9 points, made 8.6 rebounds and 3.7 block shots per game [9] [10] and became the third in the number of block shots made and the eighth in number rebounds for a career at the university [11] .
During his studies, Mutombo worked as a summer intern , once in the US Congress and once in the World Bank . In 1991, Mutombo received a bachelor's degree in linguistics and diplomacy. [12]
NBA Career
Denver Nuggets
On June 26, 1991, in the NBA draft, Mutombo was selected in the first round by the Denver Nuggets team under number four, after Larry Johnson ( Charlotte Hornets ), Kenny Anderson ( New Jersey Nets ) and Billy Owens ( Sacramento Kings ) Dickembe hired ProServ and David Falk to manage his contract and finances. The money he received under the contract, he planned not to spend on expensive purchases, but to put in a bank account [13] . Dickembe debuted in the NBA on November 1 in an away game against Golden State Warriors . In this match, Mutombo came out in the starting lineup, becoming the second most successful team, gaining 18 points, making 16 rebounds and 3 block shots, but his team lost 105–108 [14] . In his debut season, he scored an average of 16.6 points, made 12.3 rebounds and 3 block shots per game. Due to his successes, he was invited to participate in the NBA All-Star Game , as well as being included in the NBA rookie team and took second place in the vote for the title “ NBA Rookie of the Year ”, which went to Larry Johnson [15] .
The 1992/93 season , the Nuggets began with a new coach, Dan Isl . Under his leadership, the team gained 12 more wins in the season than in the previous one, and did not reach the playoffs a bit. In the 1993/94 season , thanks in part to Mutombo's defense, the team managed to become the eighth in the Western Conference and make it to the playoffs. In the first round, the Nuggets met the strongest Seattle Supersonics league team. After losing the first 2 matches, the club from Denver managed to get together and win the next two. In the third match, Mutombo was able to score 15 rebounds and make 8 block shots. In the last seconds of the overtime, Dikembe made a decisive selection and held the ball to the final siren. This victory in the series was the first in the history of the NBA, when the team, which took 8th place in the conference, was able to defeat the leader of the regular season. For five playoff games, Mutombo made 31 block shots, setting a record for a series of five games [16] . In the second round, the Nuggets met with Utah Jazz . Having lost, as in the first round, three starting games, the team, largely thanks to the game of Mutombo in defense, managed to equalize, but still lost in the decisive 7 game. The Congolese on average in the playoff games scored 13.3 points, making 12 rebounds and 5.8 block shots [8] .
In the 1994/95 season, one of the leading LaFonso Ellis club players was injured, the club management changed three head coaches. For the third consecutive season, Mutombo entered the starting lineup in all 82 games of the championship and scored an average of 11.5 points per game and made 12.5 rebounds and 3.9 block shots. For his defense game, he received his first title of the best defensive player , was included in the second national team of all defense stars and took part in the match of all NBA stars.
In his last season in Denver, Mutombo averaged 11 points per game and made 11.8 rebounds and 4.5 block shots per game. In the middle of the season, Dikembe was injured with his left ankle and on February 17, 1996 was unable to enter the match against Charlotte Hornets , thus interrupting a series of 295 exits to the site, which is the third result in the history of the NBA [17] . By the end of the season, Mutombo began to say that he would most likely leave the team at the end of the contract as a free agent. Dissatisfaction with the actions of the head coach and general manager, as well as the dubious prospects of the team, led Mutombo to sign a contract with Atlanta Hawks at the end of the season. A team from Atlanta offered the center $ 55 million for a five-year contract [18] .
Atlanta Hawks
Unlike the Nuggets, the Hawks was one of the strongest teams in the Eastern Conference , which reached the conference semi-finals last season. Mutombo's partners in the club were attacking defender Steve Smith , forwards Christian Lettner and Tyrone Corbin , as well as one of the best defenders of the league, Muki Blaylock . In the debut season in the new team, Mutombo won his second title of the best defensive player, becoming the second in the championship in terms of the number of rebounds made and block shots. His defense partner Blaylock became the leader of the interception championship. The successful actions of both players in the defense allowed the club to become one of the NBA's strongest defensive teams that season [8] . The Hawks were fourth in the conference and were able to advance to the second round of the playoffs, where they lost to future Chicago Bulls champions led by Michael Jordan [19] .
For the second time in a row , Mutombo won the title of the best defensive player in the 1997/98 season , was included in the teams of the best NBA players and the best defense players, and also took part in the all-star match again. In the season, he entered the court in all 82 matches, spending more than 35 minutes on the court, gaining 13.4 points and making 11.4 rebounds and 3.4 block shots per game. The team again overcame the threshold of 50 victories and reached the playoffs, where they lost in the first round [8] [19] .
In the 1998/99 season, shortened to 50 games, Mutombo continued to show a good defense game and was included in the second national team of all defense stars. He was the winner of the IBM Award, the player of the year award for the computer-defined. “Hawks” again failed to get further than the second round of the playoffs [19] .
In the 1999/00 season, Mutombo became the leader of the regular rebound championship , but the team won only 28 victories in the championship and did not make it to the playoffs. The club went into the long process of perestroika and, realizing that he couldn’t win the championship in this club, Mutombo began to think about moving. The contract with Dikembe ended at the end of the 2000/01 season , and the Hawks management decided to exchange it for the Philadelphia Seventy Sixers for Theo Ratliff , Tony Kukoch and Nazra Mohammed in the middle of the season [8] [19] .
Philadelphia Seventi Sixers
Philadelphia needed a good center to replace Theo Ratliff, a traumatized person. Thus, in the middle of the season, Mutombo moved from an outsider to a challenger team. Dikembe ended up in a club with another graduate of Georgetown University - Allen Iverson , who spoke positively about his transfer to the team. Dickembe himself also expressed the hope that in Philadelphia he would be able to win his first championship ring [20] . While the future most valuable player of the championship hit the opponent’s ring, Dikembe became a reliable defense of his ring. In the new team, Mutombo scored 11.7 points per game, making 12.4 rebounds and 2.5 block shots. This allowed him to become the best defensive player of the championship for the fourth time, as well as the leader of the rebound championship and get into all symbolic teams. His teammate Iverson became the most valuable player in the championship, Aaron Mackey became the best sixth player , and coach Larry Brown became the NBA coach of the year . This season, Philadelphia reached the finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers 4-1 [8] [21] .
In the finals of the championship, several confrontations were expected at once: Iverson against Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal against Mutombo, as well as the coaching duel Larry Brown and Phil Jackson [22] . But, in spite of all efforts, the Congolese in all respects lost to his counterpart from the Lakers. In the first game, Mutombo could have won the victory of Philadelphia in regular time, but missed twice from the penalty line, and the game went into overtime [23] . In the second game, O'Neill dominated the site, almost making an extremely rare quadruple double , gaining 28 points, 20 rebounds, 9 assists and 8 block shots, which Mutombo could counter only 16 points and 13 rebounds [24] . The third match also began with the dominance of O'Neill and Bryant on the court [25] . In the second half, thanks to the efforts of Iverson and Mutombo, the Philadelphians were able to reduce the gap to 5 points. 2 minutes before the end of the fourth quarter, Brown decided to put Dikembe on the bench and try to pressure opponents. This tactic was unsuccessful, and the Lakers won the second game in a row [26] .

Mutombo became famous for his behavior on the site. After a successful block-shot, he teased the opponent, edifyingly shaking his index finger. Later, the NBA leadership began to appoint a technical foul for the execution of this gesture, considering it an unsportsmanlike behavior. Therefore, after a successful block-shot, Dikembe began to show this gesture to the audience, which was not prohibited by the rules [55] . He worked very actively with his elbows in the selection, which is why he injured many players, including Michael Jordan , Dennis Rodman , Charles Oakley , Patrick Ewing , Yao Ming , LeBron James and Tracy McGrady . His former teammate Yao Ming once joked: “I have to ask the coach to remove Dikembe from training, because if he hits someone, it will be his teammate. During the game, a chance of at least 50/50 ” [56] . In addition to his gesture, he became famous thanks to the phrase [57] [58] :
A person cannot fly in Mutombo House.
Original textThe man cannot fly in the House of Mutombo.
Personal life
In 1994, Mutombo was engaged to Michelle Roberts, a medical student at Stanford University . The couple was planning to get married, but the day before the wedding, Roberts refused to sign the wedding contract and the marriage ceremony, which Mutombo spent $ 250,000 on, was canceled [59] [60] . Dikembe married in 1996. He and his wife Rose had three children: Carrie Biamba Wamutumbo ( born Carrie Biamba Wamutumbo ) in 1998, Jean Jacques Dikembe Mutumbo Mplombo Jr. ( born Jean Jacques Dikembe Mutumbo Mplombo Jr ) in February 2001 and his third son in 2004 . Spouses adopted four more children - nephews and nieces of Rose, who remained orphaned after the death of their parents [61] .
Due to its origin and education, Mutombo speaks English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Bast , Lingala and three other African languages [62] .
Mutombo twice met with Nelson Mandela . The first time this happened in 1992 [63] , and the second time in 2005 as part of the Basketball Without Borders program [64] .
In March 2006, Mutombo received American citizenship. According to him, citizenship should help him raise money for the construction of a hospital and simplify the receipt of state support [65] . In 2008, he first participated in the vote in the presidential election [66] .
In 2008, Mutombo, at the invitation of Yao Ming, arrived in China for the Beijing Summer Olympics . There he signed a contract with Peak, a Chinese shoe manufacturer. Under the terms of the agreement, the company will produce sneakers with the number "55" and an emblem depicting his signature gesture - a raised index finger. Mutombo hopes that someday every African can afford to buy sneakers for $ 15-20. When reporters met Dikembe in training in these sneakers, he joked that manufacturers should make larger shoes for him [7] [67] .

US President's Speech on Dickemba Mutombo |
In 1997, Mutombo founded the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo . The purpose of the fund is to improve living conditions in its home country. For his charitable work, Mutombo twice received the J. Walter Kennedy Prize in 2001 and 2009 (becoming the first to receive it twice) [68] . For his activities, Sporting News magazine in 1999 and 2000 called Mutombo one of the “Good Guys in Sports” ( English “Good Guys in Sports” ). In 1999, he was selected as one of the twenty winners of the President's Service Awards, the highest state award for volunteers. Mutombo is an active participant in the NBA Basketball Without Borders program, in which NBA stars conduct tours and create basketball camps for children in different countries, including in his native Africa. In 2009, he took the newly created post of NBA Ambassador [69] . He paid the costs of uniforms and travel for the Zairian women's basketball team for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta . Mutombo is a delegate of the international agency CARE , as well as the first youth emissary of the United Nations Development Program [70] . He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of the United States Constitution, the National Constitutional Center in Philadelphia [71] .
In 2007, for his services, Dikembe Mutombo was invited to the Address “On the Country's Situation” by US President George W. Bush , in which the president noted: “we are proud to call him the son of Congo and a US citizen” [3] . US President Barack Obama on Martin Luther King Day 2010 praised Mutombo for his contribution to healthcare and education in DR Congo. On the same day, he received the John Thompson Jr. Award. Legacy of a Dream Award [72] .
Byamba Mari Mutombo Hospital
In 1997, Mutombo and the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation planned to build a 300-bed hospital for $ 29 million on the outskirts of his hometown, DR Congo Kinshasa . In 2001, the ceremony of laying the first stone took place. A series of terrorist acts took place in America that day, which is why Mutombo, along with a delegation from the United States, had to stay for 10 days in Kinshasa, since all flights were canceled [7] . The construction of the hospital began only in 2004. The delay was due to difficulties in collecting donations for the construction, although Mutombo himself contributed $ 3.5 million. The Congo government also interfered with construction in every way. Information began to appear that the athlete launders money and will use the land for other purposes [8] . Some also thought that building a hospital was a politically motivated move. This has led to a number of problems. The land where the hospital was supposed to be built almost went back to the state because it was not used. To save the land, Mutombo had to pay refugees to start cultivating it. Due to the depreciation of the dollar, construction costs rose from $ 14 million to $ 29 million [7] . Mutombo invested another $ 15 million in the construction of the hospital. His teammates donated $ 500,000, and the Houston Rockets owner donated $ 700,000. To build the hospital, Dickembe enlisted the support of former US Presidents Jimmy Carter , George W. Bush , Bill Clinton , British Prime Minister Tony Blair , UN Secretary General Kofi Anan , senators Barack Obama and Frank Wolfe, as well as many pop stars such as Bono , Danny Glover and Jay-Z [73] . On September 2, 2006, a new hospital was opened; she was named after the mother of Dikembe Byamba Marie Mutombo, who died in 1997, having failed to get to the hospital due to riots in the streets [74] [75] .
The construction of the hospital was the first task of the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation. In the future, it is planned to build a school and a basketball arena [76] .
