History
Initially, the city was called Actam-Chuleb ( Spanish: Actam Chuleb ), which is translated from Mayan means “songs of the birds of Chuleb” . In 1853 , the name of the city was changed to San Felipe, in honor of St. Felipe - a Franciscan monk and the first Mexican saint. [3]
There is a legend about another origin of the name. Three Spanish adventurers : Francisco, Kelso and Felipe, during the conquest of Yucatan , discover the Mayan graves in Chichen Itza , and after looting several graves, they hide. On the road there is a division of treasures, as a result of which Kelso and Francisco die. Felipe gets to the northern coast of Yucatan, buries treasures on the beaches of Aktam-Chuleba, and soon also perishes, and the treasure remains buried forever. Subsequently, the port was named after the Spanish adventurers, although the legend does not reveal where the prefix San appeared in the name. [four]
