Leon de los Aldama

León ( Spanish: León ) is the city and administrative center of the municipality of Leon in the Mexican state of Guanajuato . The full official name, León de los Aldama ( Spanish: León de los Aldama ), pays tribute to the brothers Juan and Ignacio Aldama, heroes of the state of Guanajuato in the war of independence . The population according to the 2015 census was 1,967,478 people. It is the largest city in the state and the fourth largest in the country.

History

On December 12, 1575, the Viceroy of New Spain, Martin Enriques de Almansa, issued a decree establishing a large fortified settlement in this valley. On January 20, 1576, Juan Bautista de Orozco founded the village of Leon, and already in 1580 he received city status.

On April 25, 1833, a cholera epidemic hit the city, and from June 18 to 19 it was flooded the second largest city in Mexico at that time [ specify ] .
