The order for the construction of the boat was given to the shipbuilding company Deutsche Werke in Hamburg on February 14, 1940 . The boat was laid on July 3, 1941 under construction number 336, launched on March 17, 1942 , on June 3, 1942 under the command of Lieutenant Klaus Bargstein entered the structure of the 4th flotilla . October 1, 1942 became part of the 2nd flotilla .
The boat made 3 combat trips in which it sank 3 vessels (19,551 grt ) and an auxiliary warship (750 grt).
June 2, 1943 sunk in the North Atlantic, south-east of Baltimore in the area with the coordinates of depth charges from the USS patrol ship USS PC-565. Of the 52 crew members, only the commander survived.
