The order for the construction of the boat was given to the Deutsche Werke shipbuilding company in Hamburg on February 14, 1940 . The boat was laid down on July 1, 1941 under building number 335, launched on March 2, 1942, and on May 19, 1942, under the command of Captain Lieutenant Volkmar Schwarzkopf, it became part of the 4th Flotilla training. October 1, 1942 became part of the 2nd Flotilla .
The boat made 1 military campaign, and did not achieve success.
October 30, 1942 sunk in the North Atlantic, east of Newfoundland in the area with coordinates depth charges from a Canadian Digby aircraft. All 53 crew members were killed.
