The order for the construction of the boat was given to the Deutsche Werke shipbuilding company in Hamburg on October 20, 1939 . The boat was laid down on November 1, 1940 under building number 306, launched on September 4, 1941, and on November 25, 1941, under the command of Corvette Captain Karl Neitzel, it became part of the 4th Training Flotilla . August 1, 1942 became part of the 10th flotilla , October 1, 1944 became part of the 33rd flotilla .
The boat made 7 military campaigns, in which it sank 11 ships (71,100 gb ), damaged 8 vessels (53,289 gb), irreversibly damaged 3 vessels (24,338 gb) and sank an auxiliary warship (249 gb). The boat survived the war, May 10, 1945 decommissioned in Saint-Nazaire , France . May 12, 1945 was transferred to the Allies. It was part of the French fleet under the name Bouan. Flooded May 1, 1959 as Q176. Cut to metal in 1960 .
