The order for the construction of the boat was given to the Deutsche Werke shipbuilding company in Hamburg on October 20, 1939 . The boat was laid down on September 11, 1940 under building number 303, launched on July 15, 1941, and on October 8, 1941, under the command of Corvette Captain Harro Schacht, it became part of the 4th Flotilla training. March 1, 1942 became part of the 2nd Flotilla .
The boat made 4 military campaigns, in which it sank 19 vessels (77,143 gb ) and damaged one vessel (6,561 gb). January 13, 1943 sunk in the South Atlantic north-west of Natal in the area with coordinates deep bombs from an American aircraft such as Catalina . All 54 crew members died.
