U-502 - a large ocean-going German submarine type IX-C , from the Second World War . The order for the construction of the boat was given to the Deutsche Werke shipbuilding company in Hamburg on September 25, 1939 . The boat was laid down on April 2, 1940 under building number 292, launched on February 18, 1941, and on May 31, 1941, under the command of Captain Lieutenant Jürgen von Rosenstiel, it became part of the 2nd Flotilla and was used to train the crew. September 1, 1941 went into operation warships of the 2nd Flotilla. The boat made 4 military campaigns, in which it sank 14 vessels (78 843 gt ) and damaged 2 vessels (23 797 gt). July 6, 1942 was sunk in the Bay of Biscay to the west of La Rochelle in the area with coordinates 46.10N, 06.40W by deep bombs of a British Wellington-type aircraft. All 52 crew members were killed. U-502 was the first boat to die in a plane attack with a spotlight on Leah.
