Story
The film takes place in the last period of the First World War. A new pilot was sent to the German squadron, in the recent past the infantryman was the young ambitious lieutenant Bruno Stahel, a native of a poor family who dreams of becoming a national hero, having received a particularly prestigious award - the Order of Merit ( Pour le Mérite ) , unofficially referred to as the “Blue Max ". For rewarding, it is necessary to shoot down 20 enemy aircraft, but the officer is ready for anything to achieve this result. His relationship with fellow pilots in the face of fierce competition is very difficult. The film also has a love line - a romance between the protagonist and the ambitious Keti, the wife of General von Klugermann, and the political component - the authorities present Stahel as an impeccable hero in order to raise the spirit of the German people who fell towards the end of the war.
At the very end of the war, the lieutenant achieves his goal, but at the pinnacle of success, he makes a fatal mistake that cost him his life. After the dramatic completion of Stahel’s career, the general, who was aware of the novel of his subordinate, tells his wife: “Get ready, you still have to put yourself in order, they are waiting for us today for dinner!”
