Biography

In the army - since 1951 , in 1954 he graduated from the Kirovobad Military Aviation School of Pilots named after Khuslyanova . Member of the CPSU since 1959 .

Feat

He served as senior pilot of the 668th Bomber Aviation Regiment of the 132nd Bomber Aviation Division of the 24th Air Army of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany , which was stationed at the Finov airfield .

On April 6, 1966, the pilot performed a planned flight on a Yak-28 jet aircraft along with navigator Yu. N. Yanov . At an altitude of 4000 meters, both engines unexpectedly failed as a result of surging , and the aircraft began to lose altitude. In an effort to prevent the uncontrolled aircraft from falling into the residential neighborhoods of West Berlin , Kapustin decided not to eject himself, and ordered Yanov to leave the car; however, he, realizing that the violation of the aerodynamics of the aircraft as a result of the destruction of his flashlight worsen the already difficult situation, refused to comply with the order. Kapustin managed to get the car to a deserted place - the plane crashed into Lake Stessensee . In agreement with NATO representatives , the raising of the remains of the aircraft and the bodies of the dead was carried out by English sappers, since the place of the crash was in the territory controlled by NATO. In the process of such a mourning event, NATO specialists from far away made fun of our military [1] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 10, 1966, Kapustin and Yanov were awarded the Order of the Red Banner , posthumously.

He was buried in the city of Rostov-on-Don at the Bratskoye cemetery . Kapustin’s house was left by his wife Galina Andreevna and son Valery.
