Morarji Ranzhoji Desai ( Hindi मोरारजी देसाई , February 29, 1896 , Bhadeli (now Gujarat State ) - April 10, 1995 , Mumbai , India ) - the fourth Prime Minister of India from March 24, 1977 to July 15, 1979 . An associate of Mahatma Gandhi , spent 10 years in British prisons. The head of the opposition, Indira Gandhi , was in solitary confinement. In 1977 he became prime minister, but in 1979 he resigned.

Biography
Morarji Ranchhodji Desai was born into the family of a village teacher. Since 1918, he held posts in the colonial administration of Bombay . In 1930 he joined the Mahatma Gandhi movement. For this Desai spent about 10 years in prison. In 1959 - 1964 , 1967 - 1969 , 1977 - 1979 - Minister of Finance, in 1967 - 1969 - Vice Prime Minister. In 1966, he unsuccessfully tried to become the leader of the INC .
Turning to the opposition against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi , in 1969 formed the party of Janat . For his political activity was in solitary confinement in 1975 - 1977 . Having been released, he won the election in 1977 , became Prime Minister [1] . In 1979 he was forced to resign due to a split in the party, in 1980 he stopped his political career. He died in 1995 .
