History
The state of Quara was created on May 27, 1967, when the Federal Military Government of General J. Gowon changed the division of the state into 4 regions, then the Federation of Nigeria, into 12 states. When they were created, the state was created from the former provinces of Ilorin and Kabba of the Northern Region and was originally called the West Central State, but was later renamed βKwaraβ - the local name for the Niger River .
Kwara has declined significantly in size since 1976 as a result of further changes in the Nigerian government. On February 13, 1976, part of the state of Idah / Dekina was set apart and merged with part of the then state of Benue / Plateau to form the state of Benue .
On August 27, 1991, five areas of local government, namely Oyi, Yagba, Oken, Okehi and Kogi, were also set aside to form part of the new state of Kogi , and the sixth region, Borgu , was merged with the state of Niger .
