Story
The story begins when a young couple, Adam ( Alec Baldwin ) and Barbara ( Gina Davis ) Maitland, take two weeks of vacation in the hope of conceiving a child. But they die in a car crash. Now they are ghosts in their own home in Winter River , Connecticut .
Barbara's sister, Jane Butterfield, is selling the house to the Dietz family in New York, whose head Charles ( Jeffrey Jones ) decided to change the situation after a nervous breakdown. Other family members are the daughter Lydia ( Winona Ryder ) and his new spouse Delia ( Catherine O'Hara ), an avant-garde sculptor , strongly influenced by interior designer Otto ( Glenn Shadix ). With the filing of Otto, the cottage is immediately subject to restructuring. This, of course, does not like the former owners of the house. However, all attempts by Adam and Barbara to drive out new tenants on their own, scaring them, did not bring success, because the living do not want to see the dead. The only one who sees them is Lydia, since she is “in itself strange and unusual.”
In search of justice for the unpleasant "living", the Maitlandes turn for help to a "living exorcism specialist" - Beatlejus ( Michael Keaton ), but immediately regret it.

According to the memoirs of Tim Burton, the main part of the film’s criticism concerned the “colorless” acting of Davis and Baldwin. But, thanks to this inadvertently arising contrast, according to Burton, the role of the Beatlejus became only brighter:
I have never considered the Maitland 100% positive characters, they had their own problems. Their essence, in my opinion, lies in the fact that they like to be boring ... If the Maitlands were not so good, Beatlejus and the other dead would not have made such a strong impression and the film would not have turned out as it is [2] .
