Biography
He studied singing with Arturo Melokki at the Pesar Conservatory [2] . He made his debut, according to various sources, in the period from 1939 to 1941 . Since 1943 he has performed at La Scala ( Milan ). Since 1946, he sang at Covent Garden ( London ), in 1957–1959 - at the Metropolitan Opera ( New York ). In 1959 he toured in the USSR , performed in the Bolshoi Theater the parts of José in Carmen by Bizet and Canio in Payatsi Leonkavallo . In 1975, having given 11 performances for 20 days in Naples and Palermo , he completed his singing career.
In 1963, I got into a car accident. He died in 1982.
Creativity
Critics note that Del Monaco’s voice, loud [3] , “of a vast range, of extraordinary strength and saturation, with baritone bottoms and sparkling top notes, is unique in its timbre. The brilliant mastery, subtle sense of style and art of reincarnation allowed the artist to perform various parts of the opera repertoire ” [4] .
At the same time, Del Monaco was not a “universal artist” and the specifics of his voice (the use of large strokes, fuzzy pianissimo, the subordination of the intonational integrity of the affect game) provided the singer with a mostly dramatic repertoire [5] .
The best role in the repertoire of Del Monaco is the role of Othello in Verdi’s opera of the same name, which he performed more than 400 times on stage and 11 in recording.
