War (art group)

The “War” group in 2009 included at least sixty people ^[4] . Among the members of the group were poets, artists, students ^[5] , philologists ^[6] , and journalists. The group also included former and current students of the University of Tartu , Rodchenko School of Photography ^[7] and other educational institutions. "War" is trying to establish free cooperation between its members, without resorting to strict structuring ^[8] . According to the statements of the group members, the “War” has no leadership, no ideologists and leaders, all activists are equal in rights ^[9] .

“War” considers his teachers in contemporary art Andrei Monastyrsky and Dmitry Alexandrovich Prigov . The sudden death in July 2007 of the classic of Moscow conceptualism, Dmitry Alexandrovich Prigov, interrupted the preparation of a joint action with the War group ^[10] . Initially, the actions were anonymous underground in nature and were called “trainings” or “trainings”. Then the activities of the group interested the artist Oleg Kulik , who supported and approved the activities of the “War” ^[11] .

For the first time, the group made a loud statement about itself on May 1, 2007, when Vorotnikov, Verzilov, Tolokonnikova and Sokol decided to join the initiative of the Bombila art group ^[8] and hold several high-profile street actions on May Day to draw attention to street art that was thought as an alternative to the gallery, and a new form of political expression, more effective than traditional rallies, processions and pickets. Activists held the Mordovian Hour campaign at the McDonald's restaurant on Serpukhovskaya Square in Moscow. Activists of an art group shouting “Free cash desk!” Threw live stray cats through the restaurant shelves. Activists said they wanted to make "a gift to the low-paid rabsil fast food, deprived on the holiday of relaxation and enjoyment of modern radical art." ^[12] . The action was suppressed by the police, the participants were detained. In the same year, “Mordovian Hour” was recognized by the newspaper “Re: Aktion” as “the most hooligan performance” ^[13] . This action also included a reference to the protest activities of Western antiglobalists, for whom the McDonald's restaurant chain is one of the symbols of globalization .

In 2007, its activists participated in the “March of Dissent” in Saratov with the slogan “I want to eat halva, I want to sit on the Path”.

At the beginning of July 2007, “War” prepared a joint action with the famous avant-garde artist Dmitry Prigov: it was assumed that the group’s activists would bring a cabinet with Prigov sitting inside on the twenty-second floor of the MSU student dormitory, which was supposed to conduct a poetic dialogue with their own notes. The action was called "The war deals only with unskilled labor." However, the action did not take place - it was banned by the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow State University, after which Prigov was hospitalized with a heart attack, and died a few days later. At the end of August of that year, Voyna held a rally Pir - a funeral for Dmitry Alexandrovich Prigov on the night of August 25, laying tables in the Moscow metro car ^[14] .

On February 10, 2008 in Kiev, after the city administration dispersed the exhibition at which Pir was shown, the action was reproduced on a larger scale, immediately on three metro lines ^[15] . The "Feast" was repeated in Kiev after the authorities of the Ukrainian capital initiated the closing of the exhibition "Common Space", in the framework of which, in particular, a video of the Moscow commemoration in Prigov was shown.

On November 28, 2007, on the eve of the State Duma elections, War, with the participation of the Bombily art group, held an unauthorized rally “PP (Monument to Prigov vs Putin's Plan )” at the opening of the Non-Fiction fair in the Moscow Central House of Artists : group activists unexpectedly went down the stretched banner from the mezzanine floor of the exhibition center with live rams in their hands ^[16] . The action is also known as the “Putin’s plan” ^[17] .

The action “Fuck for the heir to the Bear!”

The greatest public outcry was the performance “E * for the heir to the Bear!”, In which several couples had sex in one of the halls of the State Biological Museum named after K.A. Timiryazev . The rally took place on the eve of the presidential election in 2008, in which Dmitry Medvedev was the main candidate. According to the organizers of the action, it "was timed to coincide with the upcoming presidential election" ^[18] . The action was attended by five copulating couples and 2 activists holding a poster with the slogan.

The action was declared by the honorary member of the War group Alexei Plutzer-Sarno as "a portrait of the election of Russia - all of each other is e..t, and Teddy Bear looks at it with disgust." ^[19] One of the action’s commentators, artist Marina Perchikhina ^[20] , relates it to archaic rituals designed to ensure the fertility of the earth, which, in turn, is understood as an integral part of the ideology of a totalitarian system. Political scientist Ilya Prokudin ^[21] noted the parody of the action, mockingly ridiculing the national project to increase the birth rate supervised by the president. A report on the campaign posted on the Internet provoked a sharp public reaction. A number of socio-political figures and the media accused the participants of the performance of propaganda of pornography, hooliganism and abuse of moral standards.

Later, the participant of the action A. Plutzer-Sarno, holding the banner “F * re for the heir to the Bear!”, Was declared the “main pornographer of Russia” ^[19] , and against him the People’s Cathedral and the Prosecutor General’s Office initiated a criminal case under Art. 242 of the Criminal Code. He is charged with disseminating pornography.

Campaign "Humiliation of the ment in his house" - seizure of the 1st police department in Mytishchi

On May 6, 2008, in the city of Mytishchi , the campaign “Humiliation of the ment in his house” (UMVED) ^{[22] was held} (according to other sources, the action was held in the 1st police department of the city of Mytishchi ^[23] ). Going inside the department, the art group hung on the prison bars a portrait of the recently elected President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev and lined up in front of him in an acrobatic figure - the "pyramid". The action "The cop in the priest's cassock"

On July 3, 2008 at 00:30 Oleg Vorotnikov, in the cassock of an Orthodox priest, wearing a uniform of an employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, accompanied by other members of the War group, performing video and photo documentation, as well as various cover functions, went to the Seventh store continent "at ul. Neverovsky, 15, where he defiantly uploaded five complete packages of products and carried them through the cash desks without paying ^{[25] [26]} .

The action “In Memory of the Decembrists (PeDe)” - a gift to Mayor Luzhkov on City Day

On September 7, 2008, on the city’s day, the art group held a campaign “In Memory of the Decembrists ”, or “ Pestel Don't Fuck You!” In which, as a gift, to Yuri Luzhkov to the ceiling of the electric lighting department of the Auchan store near the Mega Belaya Dacha shopping center five people were suspended (three migrant workers , two homosexuals ). ^{[27] [28] [29] The} actors portraying homosexuals were actually members of minorities. Migrant workers (two Kyrgyz and one Uzbek) agreed to participate in the action for money. The verdict for the “victims” consisted of slogans of very explicit content: “Pestel don't fucking fuck anyone!”, “No to foolish pi **** yourself!”, “No to cross-eyed chocks!”, “Chocks to churkestan!”, “Black-assed” “Go home!”, “Siberia is for Siberians!”, “Glory to Moscow!” And the like.

White House Assault Promotion

On the night of November 6-7, "to commemorate the anniversary of the Great October Revolution named after V.I. Lenin" (sic!), The assault brigade of the art group "War" of 15 people stormed the territory of the White House, and then laser-painted on its facade skull with bones 12 floors high (about 40 meters). ^[30] After the operation was completed, the team climbed over the bars from the opposite side of the White House. The whole group hid in an unknown direction. FSO officers set off in pursuit of the art group “War” could not detain violators of the order ^[31] .

The Prohibition of Clubs (ZeKa) promotion - welding of the Oprichnik restaurant

The entrance to the Oprichnik restaurant was welded with metal sheets on the night of December 28-29, 2008. The working title of the action is “Citizens Safety: Charity Strengthening the Doors of the Elite Club Oprichnik” ^[32] .

"Fuck it!" - Punk concert at the Tagansky Court building

On May 29, 2009, the vocal and instrumental group of the War group called HVO (pop ensemble Huy V Ochko) held a two-minute rally in the courtroom of the Tagansky District Court of Moscow at the trial in the criminal case on the exhibition Forbidden Art - 2006 ” ^[33] in defense of the accused Erofeev and Samodurov . Unnoticed by the bailiffs, guitars, a drum, and two portable guitar amplifiers were brought into the courtroom. At the end of a short court session, punk musicians uncovered their instruments and performed a two-minute song “All cops are bastards, remember this!” ^{[34] [35] [36] [37]} .

The action "Lenya Fucked Roofs the Federals"

May 22, 2010 on the Kremlin embankment at the turn to Borovitskaya Square , near the Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge , a member of the art group “War” Leonid Nikolaev (nicknamed Lenya Yobnuty ) with a blue bucket on his head jumped onto the FSO official car with a special signal and ran over it roof, and then ran away from the officer who jumped out of the car. A video of what happened soon hit the Internet ^[31] . Activists of the “ Blue Bucket Society ” declared their non-involvement in this action ^[38] .

A few days earlier, the same Lenya, as part of the campaign “Lenya Fucked - Our President”, was already strolling with a blue bucket on his head along the oncoming lane of central Moscow streets ^[39] .

On the morning of May 28, he was captured by unknown persons at his home and taken away in an unknown direction. Later, Nikolaev managed to inform that he had been brought to the Kitay Gorod police department. He is charged under an administrative article; he faces 15 days of arrest ^[40] . On the same day, Nikolaev was released from the police before a new trial ^[41] .

The well-known human rights activist Lev Ponomarev praised the action of Nikolaev and the actions of the state:

He expressed the mood of hundreds of thousands of people, possibly even millions, who are outraged by the unpunished behavior of people with flashing lights in cars on the streets of Moscow and the inappropriate behavior of the authorities in response to this.

And Lenya, in response, did, in my opinion, not quite an adequate act. I must say that this is generally an administrative offense, and if it should have consequences, then it is exclusively within the law.

How does the state behave? Lenya was abducted by unknown people early in the morning and taken away in an unknown direction in front of relatives - they saw this through the window. Undoubtedly, the state behaves like a terrorist. Kidnapping is no longer an administrative offense, it is a criminal offense. ^[42]

On May 31, Leonid Nikolaev refused to appear in court in the case of an administrative offense. He stated that in this way he began a campaign of protest against corruption in the judicial system ^[43] .

The action “Fuck the FSB Captivity!”

The action “Fuck you at the FSB!” Took place on the night of June 14, 2010 in St. Petersburg on the birthday of Che Guevara ^{[44] [45] [46]} . Activists of the St. Petersburg faction of the War group drew a giant phallus on the drawbridge of Liteiny Bridge . At night, when the bridge was drawn, the figure rose opposite the FSB building in St. Petersburg ^[47] .

A drawing measuring 65 by 27 meters was made in 23 seconds ^{[44] [48]} . Paint was poured onto the carriageway from cans. The bridge was painted by 9 people. Graffiti unsuccessfully tried to wash two fire engines out of the hose.

One of the protesters, Leonid Nikolaev, was detained for two days. Initially, they wanted to indict him under the Criminal Code article “vandalism” ^{[49] [50]} .

Искусствовед Андрей Ерофеев, объявлявший лауреата, просто произнёс: «Хуй». Победителю «Инновации» полагались 400 тысяч рублей, однако получать их никто не вышел ^[48] . Была передана лишь краткая запись голоса Олега Воротникова, который сказал: «Привет! А что, менты выдали работу на выставку?» ^[57]

Акция «Тараканий суд»

12 июля 2010 года во время оглашения приговора по делу организаторов выставки « Запретное искусство — 2006 » в Таганском суде города Москвы московская фракция группы «Война» устроила «тараканью провокацию» в здании суда, разбросав в коридоре около 3000 мадагаскарских тараканов ^{[58] [59]} . Помимо постоянных активистов группы, в разбрасывании тараканов принимали участие Артём Лоскутов и активистка движения «Солидарность» Анастасия Рыбаченко. Активист «Войны» Пётр Верзилов и Анастасия Рыбаченко были задержаны и доставлены в ОВД. ^[60] . На них были составлены протоколы об административном правонарушении. Милиция передала документы в суд, однако бумаги были возвращены, так как суд счел, что протоколы были составлены с нарушениями ^[61] . Юрий Самодуров оценил эту акцию критически, считая, «…что так нельзя делать. Ведь в суд пришли не только люди, которых интересовал наш процесс, но и те, у кого были собственные дела в суде, зачем им вот эти тараканы» ^[61] .

Акция «Пошто пиздили Куру?»

20 июля 2010 года в супермаркете « Находка » города Санкт-Петербурга питерская фракция группы «Война» провела акцию «Пошто пиздили Куру?» или «Сказ о том, как Пизда Войну кормила». В ходе акции одна из участниц группы, Елена Костылёва, находясь в торговом зале супермаркета, частично поместила во влагалище взятую с прилавка охлаждённую курицу . В дальнейшем Костылёва вместе с помещённой во влагалище курицей покинула супермаркет. Также в акции участвовали и другие члены группы, демонстрировавшие плакаты с нецензурной надписью ^[62] .

Акция «Дворцовый переворот»

16 сентября 2010 года в ходе акции в Санкт-Петербурге питерская фракция группы «Война» перевернула несколько милицейских машин ^{[63] [64] [65]} . Участники акции Леонид Николаев и Олег Воротников задержаны в Москве 15 ноября 2010 года и отправлены в следственный изолятор ^[66] , где пробыли до 24 февраля 2011 года ^{[67] [68] [69] [70]} .

Акция «Лобзай мусора»

В январе-феврале 2011 года московская фракция группы «Война» провела акцию «Лобзай мусора», в рамках которой участницы арт-группы целовали сотрудниц милиции в общественном транспорте. Акция была приурочена к 1 марта, дате вступления в силу закона « О полиции ». По словам активистов, сотрудниц милиции больше всего возмущало не то, что их целуют, а то, что это делает девушка ^[71] . Согласно сообщению активистки Нади Толоконниковой, особенно острыми столкновениями были отмечены станции «Кузнецкий Мост», «Театральная» и «Площадь Революции» ^[72] . Один из активистов группы Алексей Плуцер-Сарно так отозвался об этой акции: «Это очередная провокация плагиаторов и мошенников» ^[73] . Ролик «Группа Война зацеловывает ментов» набрал более 1 миллиона просмотров на YouTube ^[74] .

Акция «Дорога-кормилица»

В августе 2011 года в Подмосковье и прилегающих к нему областях России московская фракция группы «Война» провели серию акций, посвященных прошедшим переаттестацию и лишенным возможности брать взятки сотрудникам милиции ^[75] . Активисты, настаивая на том, что они «хотят помочь», блокировали работу постов ДПС, самостоятельно останавливали автотранспорт, выпрашивали у водителей еду, коптили полученную пищу на мангалах, чистили ботинки дорожным инспекторам, укрывали машину ДПС настенным ковром и распивали на посту спиртные напитки, выкрикивая патриотические лозунги в защиту милиции ^{[76] [77]} .

Акция «„Менто-Ауто-Да-Фэ“, или „Е**ный Прометей“»

31 декабря 2011 года питерская фракция группы «Война» сожгла полицейский автозак на территории 71-го отдела полиции петроградского района Санкт-Петербурга. Примерно в 23:35 активист Еб**тый Дед Мороз произнёс текст «Если мусар не верит в нормального Деда Мороза, то к мусару приходит Ё**нутый Дед Мороз!» (сохранена орфография заявления в ЖЖ Плуцер-Сарно) и поджёг автозак ^[78] . Также заявлялось, что «Поймите, это не художественная, это сверхудожественная акция! Это будет наш костер тщеславия». Активисты Войны поясняют, что в акции принимали участие «Ё****** Дед Мороз», а также «Вор», «Козленок», «Каспер Ненаглядный Сокол», «Плут» и другие члены штурмовой бригады группы «Война». Кроме этого, группа заявила, что всего на момент 1 января 2012 года было сожжено 7 полицейских автомобилей с комментарием «Это только начало» ^[79] . По факту возбуждено дело по части первой статьи 213 УК РФ ^[80] . Стоимость нового автозака на базе Урала-4203-1 составляет не менее 2 миллионов рублей ^[81] . За акцию «„Менто-Ауто-Да-Фэ“, или „Е**ный Прометей“» группа была удостоена второго приза Альтернативной премии «Российское активистское искусство» в номинации «Акции, реализованные в городском пространстве» (церемония награждения лауреатов прошла в рамках Ассамблеи « МедиаУдар » в Зверевском центре современного искусства 4 декабря 2012 года, представители группы не присутствовали).

May Day of the Solidarity Movement

The War group is a participant and one of the organizers of the annual cultural May Day movement of the Solidarity movement ^[85] . “War” presented on May Day the documentation of its performance “Bear, can you point?” About President Dmitry A. Gay Pride

Activists of the "War" joined the campaign in support of the Russian gay pride , releasing a series of banners with the symbols of the Moscow Pride-2011; the series was based on materials from the “Lobzai garbage” campaign ^[89] . On May 28, 2011, War activists took part in a gay pride, where they clashed with gonfalonians, supporters of the People’s Cathedral movement, who were trying to interfere with the gay pride. Activists of the “War” were detained by the police ^[90] .

Antiseliger Civil Activists Forum

Activists of the War group organized the cultural and political program of the opposition forum Antiseliger , initiated by the leader of the movement in defense of the Khimki Forest Evgenia Chirikova ; "Antiseliger" was held in the Khimki forest from June 17 to 20, 2011 and gathered about 4 thousand participants ^[91] .

• Banksy , an artist from the UK, will support the art group with money from the sale of reproductions of one work ^[92] . The artist collected for the arrested members of the group 90 thousand pounds (4.5 million rubles) ^[93] . Information appeared on the artist’s website ^{[94] [95]} .
• In December 2010, Artemy Troitsky , Andrey Erofeev , Alexander Ivanov , Boris Kupriyanov , Andrey Kovalev , Alexander Kosolapov , Andrey Loshak , Sergey Pakhomov and Oleg Kulik recorded a video message in support of the art group ^{[96] [97]} .
• In January 2011, artist Andrei Bilzho created and published several drawings to support the War group ^[98] .

Positive ratings

"War" is engaged in political art. <...> Today, only the “War” group holds the Moscow situation of contemporary art. If not for the War group, all of contemporary Russian art would be terribly provincial, pathetic, commercial fucking. Previously, in the 1990s, this function was performed by Sasha Brener . Today, the “War” group is the foundation on which everything rests. Otherwise, all art would become a terrible provincial backwater. So with this I can only congratulate you!

I usually defend the War group from artists or activists scolding it. The “war” arose against the backdrop of boring actions of the non-parliamentary opposition and against the background of secret gallery art of contemporary artists. “War” wants it to be fun - for the artist this is generally the most important and the most normal desire: to make it radically fun. And the “War” shows an example of how you can have fun pretty well, using political, pornographic and whatever texture. It’s impossible to perceive them as activists, for me it’s such aesthetes who make very passionate and at the same time extremely disciplined art. It is bewitching. In general, I believe that art has the right to be beautiful and bewitching, mystifying and, in this sense, reactionary. Political analysis, position and action should be progressive.

And they are not unrecognized geniuses. Losers-posers arranging actions on the principle of “come-shit-go”. For the sake of public relations, they are ready to at least dance on the grave, at least publicly take off their underpants. And they do not care that after their actions innocent people suffer - employees of the subway, museum watchmen. From the stocks of these urban lunatics it smells bad

Innovation Competition Award

On April 7, 2011, the group was awarded the Innovation Prize ^[108] in the nomination “The Work of Visual Art”. The competition is held by the State Center for Contemporary Art (NCCA) with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.

The prize was awarded for the image of the phallus on Liteiny Bridge in St. Petersburg, which the participants of the War painted on the night of June 14, 2010. After the bridge was divorced, a 65-meter drawing rose opposite the building of the St. Petersburg FSB Directorate . The size of the premium is 400,000 rubles ^{[109] [110]} .

Members of the art group for the prize did not appear. Activists of the group Leonid Nikolaev and Oleg Vorotnikov explained this act by the fact that their work does not require official approvals ^{[109] [111]} .

On July 1, 2011, it became known that the War group donated 400,000 rubles to the Innovation State Prize as a gift from the human rights organization Agora to help political prisoners ^[112] .
