Biography
Childhood and Youth, Vietnam Service
Tom Savini was born November 3, 1946 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Since childhood, he became interested in experiments with makeup, being influenced by a biographical film about the life of Lon Cheney, “ A Man with a Thousand Faces "(1957). While the boys were playing football, little Tom could spend hours sitting in front of the mirror, applying makeup to his face. In the years 1969-70. Tom served in Vietnam as a war photographer.
Start of film career: 1972-1985
When Tom Savini got into the film business, his philosophy was the expression "The more you do, the more you have to do." He began his career as a special make-up artist in Bob Clarke's " Deadly Dream " (1972). And already in Clark's next picture, “Madman” (1974), he was the main make-up artist. Then he worked for 6 years as a photographer during the day, and in the evening he composed the repertoire for the provincial theater in North Carolina, periodically performing there as an actor, and, of course, was a make-up artist there.
He later became a good friend of George Romero . He made special effects for his films Martin (1977), Day of the Dead (1985). In the last film, Savini was helped by his student Greg Nicotero . In 1984, Savini acted as a director, filming three episodes for the series “ Tales of the Dark Side ”.
1985 - Present
In 1990, again as a director, he made a remake of the film " Night of the Living Dead ". In 2005, Savini played a cameo role in George Romero's film Land of the Dead . Two years later, in Planet of Fear , Tom played a clumsy cop. For the entire film, he killed only one zombie, an old man with a dropper, and shot his boss - the sheriff. Subsequently, the plot he was torn to pieces by zombies.
Recognition and fame
Thanks to the special effects created by Savini, characterized by high naturalism and allowing many films to collect large box office, he was nicknamed "The genius of blood" [1] . During his film career, Savini was nominated in 1980 for the Saturn film award in the category " Best Makeup " for the film " Dawn of the Dead ", and in 1986 he was awarded the same prize and in the same nomination for the film " Day of the Dead ". In 2003, Savini at the New York City Horror Film Festival was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award [2] .
Although the profession of a master in special effects does not oblige him to appear on the screen, Savini became the most widely known to the viewer by playing the role of the Sex Machine in Robert Rodriguez's film From Dusk Till Dawn . At the same time, there were rumors that Savini is a pathological person with painfully cruel inclinations.
Tom Savini can also be seen as the killer Osiris Amanpour in Rodriguez's film "Machete" (2010), as well as in his sequel " Machete Kills ."
