Choir College named after M.I. Glinka

The Mikhail Glinka Choral School at the State Academic Chapel of St. Petersburg is the oldest professional music educational institution.

History

The ancestors of the Choral School were young singers in the composition founded in the XV century. The choir of sovereign song clerks in Moscow , and in 1703 transferred to St. Petersburg and subsequently renamed the Court Singing Chapel. Initially, young singers were only involved in singing, but since the beginning of the 19th century, attempts have been repeatedly made to establish regular training for them.

In the XIX century. at the Capella , regency (conducting) and instrumental classes were opened, which in 1946 became the Choral School. Among the leaders and teachers of the Capella until the beginning of the 20th century: D. Bortnyansky , A. Lvov , M. Glinka , G. Lomakin , S. Smirnov , M. Balakirev , N. Rimsky-Korsakov , A. Lyadov , S. Lyapunov , A. Arensky , S. Smolensky .

In 1920 , female voices were introduced into the Capella choir, originally consisting of men and boys, and girls were accepted into the Choral School for several years. In 1944, part of Capella’s pupils evacuated during the Leningrad blockade moved to Moscow, where the Moscow Choir School (now the Popov Academy of Choral Art ) was created on their basis.

In 1954, the Chapel and the Choir School were named after M. I. Glinka . Since 1955, the School and its choir of boys have been an independent organization (since 1986 at the Workshop st. , 4).
