Biography
Early Period
The group was formed in 1984 in the city of Stevenage ( Hertfordshire , England) on the basis of the Perfect Disaster team. The initial lineup included vocalist Karl McCoy , guitarist Paul Wright, drummer Nod Wright, saxophonist Gary Whisker, and bassist Tony Pettitt. The name Fields of the Nephilim was given to the group by vocalist Karl McCoy, who was interested in occultism from a young age. The word "Nephilim", according to McCoy, is found in the biblical book of Genesis and denotes the descendants of angels and mortal women.
Soon, the musicians began an active concert activity, attracting the attention of the public with their original image : they appeared on the stage in long cloaks covered with dust, as well as constant cowboy hats and high boots. The lyrics of the group were mainly devoted to occult topics, and some of them were inspired by the works of American writer Howard F. Lovecraft .
After some time, left the band Gary Whisker replaced the second guitarist Peter Yeats. In 1985, the band released a demo album Burning the Fields at their own expense, which attracted the attention of Beggars Banquet Records , which signed a contract with the group and in 1986 released two Fields of the Nephilim singles - “Power” and “Preacher Man”. Both singles hit the UK independent charts, with Preacher Man getting to the second position [1] .
Commercial success
The band's first studio album , Dawnrazor , was released on Situation Two Records in 1987 . The disc was well received by the public, and in support of it, the group made a tour of Europe . The following year, the musicians recorded a second full-length album, The Nephilim , which allowed them to perform in the US for the first time and strengthened the fame of the team. This album reached the twelfth line in the British charts and was accompanied by the successful single "Moonchild". In the same year, the first official video recording of a band called Forever Remain [1] was released .
In 1990, Fields of the Nephilim released their third album, Elizium , which many fans recognized as a reference , as well as the double live album Earth Inferno . However, despite the growing success, differences within the group began, reaching their apogee by 1991 . The concert in Düsseldorf on May 31, 1991 was the last performance of the group, and it finally broke up with the departure of Karl McCoy from the band in October of the same year.
Activities of the group members after its collapse
Singer Karl McCoy has put together a new team called The Nefilim , which released the only Zoon album in 1996 .
Other former Fields of the Nephilim members - Peter Yeats, Tony Pettitt and the Wright brothers - organized The Rubicon , inviting Alan Dilani as the vocalist, and also released one album, What Starts, Ends, in 1992 . Subsequently, the Wright brothers founded their own band, Last Rites , and Tony Pettitt retired to the gothic metal band NFD .
Reorganization of the group and the modern period
The activities of the side projects of the former team members were commercially unprofitable, with the result that almost ten years later, the Fields of the Nephilim group was reorganized.
The “reborn” Fields of the Nephilim returned with the Fallen album in 2002 . This disc, which was formally the fourth studio work of the group, was in fact a release of previously unreleased tracks, made without the consent of its members [1] .
Attracting session musicians for live performances, Karl McCoy actually recorded the new Mourning Sun album in 2005 independently. At the moment, this is the last studio disc, released under the name Fields of the Nephilim. In 2011, the group became the headliner of the Wave Gothic Treffen festival [2] , and in 2012 released the DVD Ceromonies [3] .
