Liberation (fonts)

Liberation is the common name for the three TrueType font families: Liberation Sans , Liberation Serif, and Liberation Mono . They are metrically compatible with Monotype Arial , Times New Roman, and Courier New fonts, respectively.

Content

History

Fonts developed by Steve Matteson of Ascender Corp. like Ascender Sans and Ascender Serif [1] . A variant of these fonts in addition to the monospace font and under an open license is licensed by Red Hat , Inc. like Liberation fonts [2] .

Feature

Liberation Sans and Liberation Serif are close in character size to the Monotype , Arial, and Times New Roman fonts, respectively.

Liberation Mono is stylistically closer to Liberation Sans than to Courier New , although it is metrically compatible with it.

Liberation fonts are marketed as a free, free replacement for the above commercial fonts.

Unrealized functionality

Unlike modern versions of Times New Roman, Arial and Courier New, Liberation fonts do not support such advanced OpenType tools as ligatures , minuscule digits or mathematical fractions .
