Biography
In 534, after the murder of Hermenefred by the Franks [1] [2] Amalaberga, together with the two remaining children, Amalafrid and daughter Rodelinda , fled to Ravenna to her relative, the Ostrogoth king Theodahad [3] [4] . In 540, Amalafrid and his sister, along with other Ostrogothic captives, were ordered to Constantinople by order of the commander Belisarius . Here Amalafrid was admitted to the Byzantine military service , having received command over one of the court scholas . His sister was soon married to the Lombard king Audoin [5] [6] [7] .
In 552, Amalafrid, among other Byzantine military leaders, was sent by Emperor Justinian I with a large army to help the Lombards, who fought with the Gepids . However, due to religious unrest in the city of Ulpiana, most of the Byzantine army remained within the empire and only Amalafrid with a small detachment arrived at Audoin. Amalafrid took part in the victory for the Lombards of the battle with the gepids on the field of Asfeld.
Nothing is known about the fate of Amalafrid. According to Venantius Fortunatu ( Carm. App. 3 ), Amalafrid had a son Artahis, about whom, apart from his name, nothing is known [8] .
