Story

When Andy Mooney was hired by Disney Consumer Products in early 2000 to help tackle falling sales, the idea of a Disney Princess franchise was born. Shortly after joining the company, Mooney participated in his first Disney on Ice show. While waiting in line, he was surrounded by young girls dressed like princesses. “They were not even Disney products. They were born princesses, he thought. Soon after the realization of this, a line of Disney princesses was formed [4] .

Despite limited advertising, the release of Disney Princesses was a huge success. [4] Sales at Disney Consumer Products grew from $ 300 million in 2001 to $ 3 billion in 2006.

In 2009, expected sales totaled $ 4 billion.

Today there are over 25,000 franchise-based products.

Criticism

On December 24, 2006, Peggy Orenstein, in the New York Times , published an article “What happened to Cinderella?” In which she noted her concerns about the effects of princesses on girls [4] . Tamara Weston from Time criticized the franchise, referring to the princesses as " girls in trouble " and a bad role model for little girls [7] .

Other sources also expressed concern that the franchise could give young girls the wrong signal. At the same time, other parents believe that girls eventually grow out of this phase [8] .

In 2016, a group of psychologists led by Professor Sarah Coyne of Brigham Young University published an article stating that Disney princesses make children susceptible to gender stereotypes [9] .
