Disney Princesses are the common name for the cartoon characters of Walt Disney Studios , whose images form the basis of the product line for children. Initially, the term "Disney princesses" refers to the six heroines of the Disney adaptations of classic fairy tales: Aurora (The Sleeping Beauty ), Snow White , Belle (The Beauty and the Beast ), Jasmine ( Aladdin ), Ariel (The Little Mermaid ), and Cinderella . Disney princesses also include Mulan , Tiana (The Princess and the Frog ), and Pocahontas . On October 2, 2011, the Princesses joined Rapunzel (“ Rapunzel: A Tangled Story ”) , and on May 11, 2013 - Merida (“ Brave ”) . In 2019, through the official website and goods, Moana joined becoming the 12th official princess, since it took her more than a year to enter the lineup she would not have a coronation.
When Andy Mooney was hired by Disney Consumer Products in early 2000 to help tackle falling sales, the idea of a Disney Princess franchise was born. Shortly after joining the company, Mooney participated in his first Disney on Ice show. While waiting in line, he was surrounded by young girls dressed like princesses. “They were not even Disney products. They were born princesses, he thought. Soon after the realization of this, a line of Disney princesses was formed .
Despite limited advertising, the release of Disney Princesses was a huge success. Sales at Disney Consumer Products grew from $ 300 million in 2001 to $ 3 billion in 2006.
In 2009, expected sales totaled $ 4 billion.
Today there are over 25,000 franchise-based products.

Disney Princess Parodies
One of the most striking parodies of such Disney princesses as Snow White, Cinderella, Ariel and Belle is Princess Clara from the animated series " Multreality ".
On December 24, 2006, Peggy Orenstein, in the New York Times , published an article “What happened to Cinderella?” In which she noted her concerns about the effects of princesses on girls . Tamara Weston from Time criticized the franchise, referring to the princesses as " girls in trouble " and a bad role model for little girls .
Other sources also expressed concern that the franchise could give young girls the wrong signal. At the same time, other parents believe that girls eventually grow out of this phase .
In 2016, a group of psychologists led by Professor Sarah Coyne of Brigham Young University published an article stating that Disney princesses make children susceptible to gender stereotypes .
