Interzonal chess tournament 1970

The 8th interzonal chess tournament , one of the stages of the world championship chess competitions, was held from November 8 to December 13, 1970 in Palma de Mallorca .

The first 6 winners of the tournament received the right to participate in the matches of the candidates in 1971 . L. Portisch, who had a better coefficient than V. Smyslov (their extra match ended with a score of 3: 3), became a substitute in the event that any of the applicants dropped out, but this did not happen.

This tournament was the last held according to the old scheme - one tournament on a round-robin system (only the number of participants and the number of weekend places fluctuated). Starting from the 9th (1973), there were two tournaments.
