Yaakov Dory (Yakov Dostrovsky) was born on the territory of the Russian Empire in Odessa . After the pogroms of 1905 , the Dostrovsky family emigrated to Palestine , which at that time was part of the Ottoman Empire .
After graduating from school in Haifa , during the First World War , Yaakov enlisted in the Jewish Legion of the British Army . Then he joined Hagan and received the underground nickname Dan.
In 1939 , Dory was appointed Chief of Staff of the Haganah and held this position until 1946. From 1946 to 1947 , Dory headed the delegation for the purchase of weapons in the United States .
After the formation of the Israel Defense Forces, Dory became the first chief of the General Staff. At this time, he had serious health problems, which prevented him from directing military operations during the 1948 War of Independence . For this reason, during the war, the entire burden fell on his deputy - Igal Yadin . The Dory Cadence ended on November 9, 1949 .
After resigning from the army, Dory was chairman of the scientific council at the Prime Minister’s office and president of the Haifa Technion (Polytechnic University). Dory held his last position until 1965 .
The son of Yaakov Dory, Jerahmiel Dori, in 1969 - 1972 commanded the engineering forces of the Israel Defense Forces.
