Biography

Founder of bryophyte biogeography .

Herzog studied in Freiburg, Zurich with Karl Schröter and in Munich with Ludwig Radlkofer .

He traveled a lot around the world for scientific purposes: in 1904 and 1906 - to Sumatra , in 1905–1906 - to Ceylon , in 1907–1908 and 1910–1912 - to South America ( Bolivia , northern Argentina ).

In 1914 he became privat-docent of the University of Munich , in 1920 - a professor .

Since 1925, he taught botany at the University of Jena .

In 1955 , the University of Greifswald awarded him the title of Doctor honoris causa .

Among the taxa described by him, the following genera can be distinguished:

  • Enneatypus Herzog ( Polygonaceae family)
  • Goethartia Herzog ( Urticaceae family)
  • Phyllogeiton Herzog ( Rhamnaceae family)
  • Rondonanthus Herzog ( Eriocaulaceae family)
  • Saccanthus Herzog ( Scrophulariaceae family)
