Directors and episodes

"New York, I love you" is a movie album of 11 short stories - love stories, the background of which was chosen New York . Each of the short stories is removed by the director from the list (in the order of appearance of the episodes): Jiang Wen , Mira Nair , Shunji Iwai , Ivan Attal , Brett Ratner , Allen Hughes , Shekhar Kapoor (replaced Anthony Mingella , who died shortly before filming his short story, in March 2008 ) , Natalie Portman (directorial debut), Fatih Akyn , Joshua Marston . Randall Bolsmeier is responsible for the transition from short story to short story.

The film has already been shown at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival [3] . Then it consisted of 13 short stories: in addition to the above, the film included short stories by Scarlett Johansson , who, like Natalie Portman, had never been a film director before, and Russian Andrei Zvyagintsev , but subsequently it was decided to remount the film. Also in the list of directors was initially Woody Allen , then he was supposed to take part in the project as an actor (in the short story Scarlett Johansson), but in the end he left the project [4] .

One of the short stories with the participation of Natalie Portman as a Hasidim was already filmed in the vicinity of Brooklyn Bridge on March 12 - 13, 2008, but Hasid Abe , who had not previously acted in films, had refused to participate in the film due to his ban religious community [5] . Karfen was immediately replaced by Irfan Khan [6] , and in the photo gallery from filming the movie on Natalie Portman’s site, Karpen’s face is now covered by a photograph of Keira Knightley [7] . Also from the list of directors came Elbert Hughes and Park Chan Uk .

Filming Conditions

The producers set the directors a number of conditions:

  • The budget of each of the short stories is limited to a figure of 1,500,000 US dollars (the declared total budget of the film is $ 14,000,000).
  • In mass scenes, no more than 20 actors should be involved, and a strictly defined number of films must be expended.
  • The director is given the opportunity to independently choose a sound engineer, operator and editor; the remaining filming participants will be appointed by the producers themselves.

Andrey Zvyagintsev in the project

The producer Emanuel Benbii invited Andrei Zvyagintsev to the project “ Paris, I Love You ”, but then Zvyagintsev refused, explaining that he did not understand the idea of the film [8] . However, after watching “Paris, I love you” and being impressed by Alexander Payne ’s short story “14th arrondissement”, Andrey accepted the invitation to participate in the sequel.
