Hayashio-class submarines ( は や し お 型 潜水 艦 ) are a series of Japanese diesel-electric submarines . They became the second, after Oyashio , type of submarine built in Japan after World War II . Based on US submarines of the Barracuda type . Two submarines of this series, the Hayashio and the Wakashio, were built in 1960-1962. These relatively small submarines with limited seaworthiness , along with the similar Natsushio type , formed the basis of the submarine fleet of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces before replacing them with more modern submarines of the Osio and Uzusio types . Both Hayashio-class submarines were withdrawn from service in 1979 .
